Del sensor al papel

From sensor to paper

ε → px → f/N → ppp

How large can this photograph be printed, and where will it be viewed from? This tool joins the whole chain: sensor pixels → diffraction limit of the capture → ceiling of the printing process → visual acuity at the viewing distance. The verdict is always the same question: which of the four links limits the print. The acuity ε uses the same presets as the M11 rangefinder tool.

The classic finding shows up in the grey line: if viewers stand at a distance proportional to the diagonal, the 1.5 × diagonal line runs parallel to the pixel and diffraction ceilings (all of them slope-1 straight lines on logarithmic axes), so the required Mpx barely depend on the print size.

Unidades: ppp.

“Delivered” is the minimum of pixels, diffraction (and optics, if set) and process at each paper’s width (long side, current crop applied). Two verdicts: the first compares what is delivered against what the eye demands at the chosen distance d (the same for every paper, as when leafing through a book); the second compares it against the demand at that paper’s “natural” distance, 1.5 × its diagonal (the wall case: a 70×100 is viewed from 1.8 m, not from 35 cm). Thresholds: to spare ≥ 1.15 × the demand, borderline between 0.85 and 1.15, short below. Units: ppi.

Same print, same distance, same aperture and process for every row; only the pixels change and, with them, the magnification. Bodies apply the current crop; the “Q3 43 → f mm” rows use their own in-camera crop (c = 43/f) instead. The row highlighted in green is the chosen camera; the amber one is the “compare with” selection (its ceiling is drawn dashed on the chart). The SL3-S 96 Mpx multishot needs a tripod and a static scene: when multishot pays off. The critical apertures of each sensor are in diffraction and aperture.

Qué archivo basta · conexión con el binning

Which file suffices · connection with binning

The criterion is the one of the main verdict: a file suffices when its pixels, at the print width, deliver at least what the rest of the chain (eye at d, diffraction, process) can use. More on the small file in M11 binning; the diffraction that sets the ceiling, in diffraction and aperture; to lay out the print, the zine generator; the acuity ε comes from the M11 rangefinder tool.

Modelo

Model

  1. Ojo. A distancia d, el detalle resoluble es s = d·tan ε; un par de líneas necesita 2s, luego ν_ojo = 1/(2·d·tan ε) en pl/mm sobre el papel y ppp_ojo = 2·ν_ojo·25.4. Con ε = 1′ y d = 25 cm salen ≈ 350 ppp: la regla clásica de los «300 ppp a distancia de lectura».
  2. Eye. At distance d the resolvable detail is s = d·tan ε; a line pair needs 2s, hence ν_eye = 1/(2·d·tan ε) in lp/mm on the paper and ppi_eye = 2·ν_eye·25.4. With ε = 1′ and d = 25 cm this gives ≈ 350 ppi: the classic “300 ppi at reading distance” rule.
  3. Píxeles. Sensor de 36×24 mm; paso de píxel = 36 mm / píxeles_ancho. Con recorte c (fracción del encuadre) quedan píxeles_ancho·c, y los ppp entregados a un ancho de copia dado son ppp_píx = píxeles_ancho·c / (ancho_copia / 25.4).
  4. Pixels. A 36×24 mm sensor; pixel pitch = 36 mm / width_px. With crop c (fraction of the frame) there remain width_px·c, and the ppi delivered at a given print width are ppi_pix = width_px·c / (print_width / 25.4).
  6. Diffraction. Airy disc c_A = 2.44·λ·N with λ = 550 nm; practical frequency at the sensor ν_sensor ≈ 1/c_A (explicit convention: one line pair per Airy diameter). Magnification M = print_width / (36 mm·c); on the paper it becomes ν_sensor / M, converted to ppi as above: ppi_diff = 2·(ν_sensor/M)·25.4. This is the same frontier as in diffraction and aperture: that page uses the MTF50 of diffraction, 0.404/(λ·N), and this one 1/(2.44·λ·N) = 0.41/(λ·N); they agree to 1 % (92 vs 93 lp/mm at f/8) and yield the same critical apertures, where the Airy frequency meets the sensor’s Nyquist: f/5.6 for 60 Mpx, f/8.9 for 24, f/4.5 for the 96 Mpx multishot.
  8. Lens (optional). By default the optics are perfect and the capture only loses to diffraction. If a lens with MTF50 ν_lens at its best (120, 90 or 60 lp/mm) is chosen, both combine in quadrature: ν_capture = 1/√(1/ν_lens² + 1/ν_sensor²), and ν_capture replaces ν_sensor everywhere above. Wide open, the ceiling stops being the 266–530 lp/mm fiction of f/1.4–f/2.8 and the optics take over; stopping down hands control back to diffraction.
  9. Proceso. Techo duro del selector: inyección fine art 360, minilab químico 300, offset 175 lpi ≈ 300 equivalentes, rotulación de gran formato 150, pantalla 220 ppp.
  10. Process. Hard ceiling taken by the selector: fine-art inkjet 360, chemical minilab 300, offset 175 lpi ≈ 300 equivalent, wide-format signage 150, screen 220 ppi.
  11. Veredicto.
  12. Verdict. All four are expressed as ppi on the paper and the limiting link is the minimum. The chart inverts each ceiling: it equates what is delivered with what the eye demands and solves for the maximum width, width_pix = width_px·c·d·tan ε and width_diff = 2·d·tan ε·ν_sensor·36·c; the process yields a minimum distance d_proc = 25.4 / (ppi_proc·tan ε). The “for this print” row solves the same equations backwards: Mpx_needed = (ppi_eye·width/25.4)²·(2/3)/10⁶ (pixels in the frame used, 3:2 image); N_max = 2·25.4·36·c / (2.44·λ·width·ppi_threshold), with ppi_threshold the minimum of eye, pixels and process (the aperture beyond which diffraction would take over; with a lens, the quadrature is solved first), rounded down to the nearest third-stop; width_max(d) = min(width_pix, width_diff) at the chosen d; and d_min = max(width/k_pix, width/k_diff, d_proc), the distance from which all four links cover what the eye demands.

Declared simplifications: a sensor without an AA filter or demosaicing losses (pixels count in full), diffraction as the sole defect of the capture unless a lens is set (and even then no shake or defocus), ceilings combined by minimum rather than in quadrature (except optics and diffraction with each other), and the process reduced to a single figure. Every ceiling is optimistic on its own; the minimum of the four is, for that reason, an honestly optimistic ceiling.

All four rows are recomputed with the simulator’s own code every time the page opens; any value out of tolerance would be flagged FAIL. Row 3 pins the diffraction convention (1/(2.44·λ·N), tolerance 90–96 lp/mm): switching it, say, to the MTF50 = 0.404/(λ·N) of the diffraction page (92 lp/mm at f/8) stays within tolerance, but any other convention would require updating that row. The optional lens plays no part in the verification: it is always computed with perfect optics.
