Softness is set by θ = 2·arctan(d/2L): the angular size of the source as seen from the subject. The penumbra on the background measures w = d·s/L. The angle of the light does not change its hardness, it only displaces the shadow: that is where the portrait patterns live.

Exposure at full power: f = GN/D, with GN_ef = GN·√(ISO/100)·2^(−loss/2). Every stop of loss divides the guide number by √2. Illuminance falls as 1/D², which is why bringing the light closer darkens the background and separates the subject.

The Q3 43's leaf shutter synchronises at every one of its speeds up to 1/2000. A fast time underexposes the ambient by log₂(t_neutro/t_sinc) stops, but it is not free: past a certain speed the window is shorter than the pulse and the burst is clipped, captured = (1−e^(−T/τ))/P with τ = t.5/ln2, the same model as the manual, §07. The amber curve is what you gain and the teal one what flash you have left: 2·log₂(GN_ef·√captured / (N·D)). Where the teal curve crosses zero lies your fastest useful speed. The M11 and the SL3-S stop at their X-sync and above it have only HSS, which costs a further 2 to 3 EV.
Full sun ≈ EV15 (sunny 16 rule). The speeds in the dropdown are the ones the body chosen above allows. The ND subtracts from ambient and flash alike; the burst's t.5 is set in the balance tab.

Each control touches only its own share: the shutter speed is pure ambient (it does not reach the flash as long as you stay in sync), while power and distance are pure flash. ISO and aperture cancel out in the flash/ambient quotient, so the balance is moved by time and power, not by the aperture, which merely costs you depth of field. In TTL the camera sets the power to nail the subject, which is why raising the ISO lifts the background alone. A leaf shutter frees the shutter speed up to 1/2000 without HSS, with a single limit: the discharge decays as e^(−t/τ) with τ = t.5/ln2 (1.44 ms with the iT32's t.5 of 1/1000 s) and is cut off at t_c = −τ·ln(1−P), so at full power the 1/2000 s window collects only 29 % of the energy, −1.8 EV, whereas at 1/4 the pulse fits whole and nothing is lost. It is the model of the manual, §07. That same pulse is what freezes: compare the ambient smear, v·t, with the burst's, v·t_c.
