The simulator does not imitate a photograph, it computes its physics. Every reading follows from three relations: the angular size of the source θ = 2·arctan(d/2L), the falloff given by the inverse-square law E ∝ 1/D² and the guide number f = GN/D. Everything else is a consequence.
Selector de modificador
Modifier selector
The row of buttons at the top is common to all four tabs. Each modifier fixes two things: the diameter of the source d in centimetres and the light loss in stops. These are typical, approximate figures, meant as a point of departure. You can refine them by hand with the sliders on each tab.
Selector de cuerpo
Body selector
The second row picks the camera and with it its sync speed: M11 1/180, SL3-S 1/200, Q3 43 with a leaf shutter up to 1/2000, plus a generic body at 1/250. From that follow the ceiling of the speed dropdown in "Overpowering the sun", the X-sync warning in the balance, the leaf-shutter advantage and the pixel pitch used to count the smear. GN, ISO, working distance and modifier loss are now a single state: changing them on one tab changes them on all three.
Pestaña "Sombras"
The "Shadows" tab
It examines why a light is hard or soft. The canvas on the left is not a decorative gradient: for every point of the background it works out what fraction of the source remains unobstructed by the object. The black disc is the umbra (full shadow) and the diffuse halo is the true penumbra. The violet circle marks where the object stands, so that you can see how its shadow travels. The diagram beside it is the same case seen from the side, with the extreme rays of the source.

The angular size θ is the indicator of hardness: below some 5 degrees the light is hard, above some 15 degrees it is soft. The penumbra is the width of the shadow's transition on the background, w = d·s/L. The umbra disappears once the source exceeds the object in angular size. The displacement is how far the shadow travels on account of the angle of the light.

A 90 grados, luz lateral pura.
With the subject facing the camera, raise the light and swing it out some 30 to 45 degrees and the "loop" appears, the short shadow running down from the nose. Further round and higher gives Rembrandt. At 90 degrees, pure side light. Note that moving the angle barely alters the penumbra: softness is set by size, not by position.
Pestaña "Caída de luz (GN)"
The "Light falloff (GN)" tab
It examines the reach and the exposure of the flash with distance. At full power, the correct aperture is f = GN/D. The effective guide number takes the ISO and the modifier's loss into account: GN_ef = GN·√(ISO/100)·2^(−pérdida/2). Each stop of loss divides the GN by the square root of two.
The graph alternates between two readings. Under "aperture required" you see the f-number that exposes correctly at each distance, with a marker at your working distance. Under "relative illuminance" you see the falloff in stops with respect to that distance, which drops as 1/D².

It examines the advantage of the leaf shutter in prevailing over daylight. The idea is to underexpose the bright ambient while the flash goes on exposing the subject correctly.
El porqué físico
The physical reason
Ambient exposure depends on the aperture, the shutter speed and the ISO. Flash exposure depends on the aperture, the ISO and the distance, but not on the shutter speed so long as you stay within sync. A leaf shutter, housed in the lens, synchronises with flash at every one of its speeds. That lets you use a very fast time to extinguish the ambient without touching the flash's light. A focal-plane shutter synchronises only up to its X-sync, taken here as 1/200, and above that it needs HSS, which spreads the burst into a train of pulses and cuts its useful power sharply.

Ambient light is given in EV at ISO 100. Full sun corresponds to EV 15, which is the sunny 16 rule (f/16 at 1/125 and ISO 100). You choose the aperture, the ISO, the leaf shutter's sync speed, the distance to the subject, the guide number and the modifier's loss.
La gráfica y las lecturas
The graph and the readings
The horizontal axis is the shutter speed. The amber line is the ambient exposure with respect to neutral: the faster the time, the further it falls below the "neutral ambient" line. The green band is the ground that only the leaf shutter reaches, between the focal-plane X-sync and the leaf shutter's own sync. The four readings sum up the case:
- Ambient with the leaf shutter: how many stops the ambient sits below neutral at your sync speed. Negative means a darker sky.
- Ambient with a focal-plane shutter at 1/200: the same thing capped at the X-sync. It usually stays bright or even overexposed.
- Leaf shutter advantage: the difference between the two, which comes to
log₂(sinc_central / 200). - Flash headroom: whether your flash reaches the subject at that aperture and distance,
2·log₂(GN_ef / (f·D)). Positive means power to spare; negative means you fall short and must move closer or raise the ISO.
t_neutro = f²·100 / (ISO·2^EV). El oscurecimiento máximo del ambiente es log₂(t_neutro / t_sinc). Ahí se ve por qué un central a 1/2000 gana varias paradas frente a un plano focal a 1/200.t_neutro = f²·100 / (ISO·2^EV). The greatest darkening of the ambient is log₂(t_neutro / t_sinc). That is where you see why a leaf shutter at 1/2000 gains several stops over a focal-plane shutter at 1/200.Pestaña "Balance ambiente"
The "Ambient balance" tab
It examines how light is divided between the subject, lit by the flash, and the background, lit by the ambient, and above all which control moves what. The exposure at any point is the sum of two independent sources: the continuous light, which accumulates throughout the shutter time, and the burst, a very brief pulse that deposits its whole energy at once.
El porqué físico
The physical reason
The ambient, in stops with respect to correct exposure, comes to a = log₂(ISO/100) + log₂(t) − 2·log₂(N) + EV, where EV is the light of the scene at ISO 100 according to the sunny 16 rule. The flash on the subject is measured with the guide number: its headroom is 2·log₂(GN_ef·√P / (N·D)), with GN_ef = GN·√(ISO/100)·2^(−pérdida/2) and P the fraction of power, full power being 1. Half a stop of power divides the reach by the square root of two, exactly as the modifier's loss does. The crux is that the shutter speed does not enter into the flash so long as you synchronise: the burst has already poured out all its light. That is why the shutter is pure ambient.
The balance is the ratio between the two exposures, and on subtracting them the ISO and the aperture cancel out. It is moved only by the time, on the ambient side, and by the power and the distance, on the flash side. The aperture is the worst control for balancing: in manual it does not even change the ratio, and it always costs you depth of field.
Manual frente a TTL
Manual versus TTL
In manual you set the power yourself, so raising the ISO or opening the aperture lifts subject and background together. In TTL the camera adjusts the power shot by shot to hold the subject exactly. With that loop closed around the subject, the ISO becomes a background control: as you raise it, the camera trims the power to leave the subject unchanged while the background rises. This is the physical reason behind the advice to "raise the ISO to bring in ambient", and it holds in TTL alone.

The two bars show the subject and the background with respect to correct exposure, the 0 at the centre. The colour marks the state: green correct, amber adrift, red blown, violet sunk. The flash/ambient ratio is how many stops the flash commands over the ambient on the subject; it is the ratio that depends on neither the ISO nor the aperture. The flash power is the outcome: in TTL the camera works it out, in manual it is the one you set. The warnings fire on going past the X-sync with a focal-plane shutter, on the clipping of the burst, quantified in stops once the shutter window falls shorter than the pulse, and when the subject or the background blows out or the power falls short.
Límites del modelo
Limits of the model
It is a geometrical model of an extended source. Diffraction is negligible at these scales and is not included. The diameters and losses of the modifiers are typical figures, not measurements of your own equipment, so adjust them if you have data of your own. The ambient light starts from the sunny 16 rule and models neither reflections nor the contrast of the scene. The shadow is computed with a circular object and a circular source, enough to understand the physics, not to predict a real face pixel by pixel. And in the balance, the independence of flash and ambient is granted by synchronisation: the fraction of the burst captured follows the exponential IGBT model of the TTL flash manual, §07, captured = (1 − e^(−min(T, t_c)/τ)) / P, with τ = t.5/ln2 (1.44 ms with the iT32's t.5 of 1/1000 s) and a cut-off at power P at t_c = −τ·ln(1 − P). At full power and 1/2000 s only 29 % is captured, −1.8 EV; at 1/4 the pulse fits whole. That same clipping now applies in the "Overpowering the sun" tab as well, which used to promise full power at any speed.
