Qué hace un filtro de densidad neutra
What a neutral-density filter does
An ND filter attenuates light by a factor that, ideally, does not depend on wavelength. It is described in three equivalent ways: by its factor (ND1000), by the stops of exposure it removes (10) or by its optical density (OD 3.0). The three relations are exact; what is not exact is the commercial naming, which rounds 210 = 1024 to 1000. An honest "ND1000" is an ND1024, and some manufacturers label it so.
OD = −log10 T T = 2−n factor = 2n = 10OD
Optical density is the useful quantity because it is additive: two stacked filters add their ODs. And it is additive outside the visible too, which will have consequences in the next section. The exposure time is multiplied by the factor: with ND1000, 1/125 s becomes 8 s.

Dónde deja de ser neutro
Where it stops being neutral
"Neutral" is specified between roughly 400 and 700 nm. Outside that band the optical density is not guaranteed, and in most constructions it drops. The sensor, as we will see, stays sensitive up to nearly 1100 nm, so what happens between 700 and 1000 nm is not a spectroscopic curiosity: it is signal that reaches the photodiodes.
Each manufacturing technology fails in a different way:
- Dyed absorbing glass. Absorption comes from metal ions dissolved in the glass, with absorption bands centred in the visible. Beyond 700 nm the absorption coefficient collapses, and the OD with it. They also tend to absorb a little more in the blue, adding a warm cast already in the visible.
- Evaporated metal film. A thin layer of nickel-chromium alloy deposited in vacuum. It attenuates by absorption and reflection, with a fairly flat response in the visible and a slow rise in transmittance towards the NIR. It is the basis of most mid- and high-range photographic NDs.
- Metal with dielectric IR cut (IRND). A dielectric stack that reflects the near infrared is added to the metal film. The OD in the NIR can be equal to or above that in the visible. It is what manufacturers advertise as "IR cut" or "IRND". Its weak point is the angle of incidence, treated below.
- Variable ND (two polarisers). Iodine-in-polyvinyl-alcohol polarisers stop polarising above 750 nm. Two crossed polarisers that block OD 3 or more in the visible are almost transparent at 900 nm. The more the variable ND is closed, the larger the excess leakage. Add to that the cross pattern on wide angles, inherent to the angular dependence of polarisation.
- Dyed resin. Square resin filters use organic dyes, the most NIR-transparent materials of the whole list. It is the worst case.
Transmitancia espectral por tipo de filtro
Spectral transmittance by filter type
Δ is the quantity that matters. An excess of 2 means that, relative to the visible, infrared gets through the filter a hundred times better than it should. Stacking two filters does not fix it: the excesses add up just like the densities.
El filtro del propio sensor
The sensor's own filter
Silicon has a band gap of 1.12 eV. A photon with less energy does not generate an electron-hole pair, and that limit corresponds to 1107 nm. Between 700 and 1000 nm the quantum efficiency is still high, around half the maximum. With nothing to stop it, a camera would see the near infrared almost as well as red.
What stops it is the filter stack glued over the sensor, which combines two mechanisms:
- Vidrio absorbente azul verdoso.
- Blue-green absorbing glass. It absorbs through electronic transitions of copper in the glass, with maximum absorption between 750 and 950 nm. It obeys the Beer-Lambert law: optical density is proportional to thickness. A 0.5 mm glass blocks half the OD of a 1 mm one, that is, it passes the square root of the transmittance.
- Reflective dielectric stack. Dozens of alternating high- and low-index layers, tuned to reflect a band starting around 650 to 690 nm. It is very effective and does not depend on thickness, but its cut-off edge shifts with the angle of incidence.
The colour filters of the Bayer mosaic do not help: they are organic dyes and become transparent in the NIR. The red filter transmits continuously from about 600 nm; the green and blue filters reopen secondary windows beyond 800 nm. That is why a leak concentrated between 700 and 800 nm raises the R channel almost exclusively, giving red or magenta, whereas a leak beyond 850 nm raises all three channels and produces an almost grey veil.
Por qué el grosor es un compromiso
Why thickness is a compromise
If blocking infrared were all that mattered, the absorbing glass would be thick and the matter settled. It is not, because a plane-parallel plate placed in a converging beam introduces aberrations, above all astigmatism and coma, which grow with thickness and with the angle of incidence. Symmetrical rangefinder lenses, with the exit pupil very close to the sensor, send beams tilted 30 or 40 degrees into the corners. A thick stack smears those corners.
The historic case is the 2006 Leica M8: to preserve the corner performance of M lenses it mounted an absorbing filter of only 0.5 mm, and the result was an excess of infrared that tinted black synthetic fabrics magenta. The manufacturer's remedy was external: UV/IR-cut filters screwed onto every lens. Later models thickened the stack and improved the coating, and the problem became marginal. With a leaking ND, that margin runs out.
Transmitancia del filtro del sensor
Transmittance of the sensor filter
Set the thickness to 0.5 mm and disable the dielectric, with the M8 preset, to reproduce that scenario qualitatively. With the dielectric active the residue of the reflection band is small, but outside that band, beyond 1000 nm, the absorbing glass is in charge again. The preset thicknesses are estimates from conversion workshops, not factory data: a modern Leica M stack is around 0.8 mm, and for the Q3 and the SL3-S there is no published figure, so they stay on the generic 1.0 mm. The lesson of the panel is that, with the dielectric active, thickness barely changes the result; the M11 is not the M8 because it has a dielectric, not because it has more glass.
Simulador de dominante
Cast simulator
The signal of each channel is an integral over wavelength of the product of every factor in the chain: scene radiance, ND transmittance, sensor-filter transmittance, quantum efficiency and the response of the pixel's colour filter.
Sc = ∫ E(λ) ρ(λ) TND(λ) Tsensor(λ) QE(λ) fc(λ) dλ
Without an ND, the infrared part of that integral is negligible against the visible because the sensor filter reduces it by three or four orders of magnitude. With an ND1000 that has an excess Δ, the visible drops a thousandfold and the infrared only 1000/10Δ. The ratio between them is multiplied by 10Δ, and what was negligible no longer is.
The simulator sets the white balance on a grey card without the filter, with the same sensor, and then compares the colour of each scene element with and without the ND, at compensated exposure. The resulting deviation is the cast introduced by the filter, separated from the object's own colour. The effect depends on the scene: vegetation reflects up to ten times more in the NIR than in the red because of the chlorophyll absorption edge at 700 nm, black synthetic fabrics are black only in the visible, and blue sky, dominated by Rayleigh scattering proportional to λ−4, is poor in infrared. Clouds, on the other hand, scatter by Mie and are almost neutral up to the NIR: they do not serve as an infrared-free reference.
The cast is not the only damage. Diffraction is proportional to wavelength, so contamination at 850 nm diffracts 55 percent more than green, and longitudinal chromatic aberration leaves it focused on another plane: it arrives as a defocused halo over the whole image. A leaking ND does not only tint; it also veils, and that veil is corrected by no white balance. The critical and optimum apertures are computed in the diffraction calculator.

Model curves, not measurements. The vertical marks the chosen density. In residual mode the bands are the verdict thresholds: up to 2 pp neutral, up to 6 pp an object-dependent cast, beyond that infrared leakage. The knee of the variable ND appears when the requested density exceeds what two polarisers can deliver in the infrared, around eleven stops.
How to read it. If the R/G deviation is noticeable but the IR fraction is small, the cast is in the visible and a white balance corrects it. If the IR fraction is large, the cast depends on the object, not on the illuminant, and no global balance removes it: compare the same filter on foliage and on sky. The colour swatches are indicative, with no camera colour matrix.
Ángulo de incidencia: focales y esquinas
Angle of incidence: focal lengths and corners
Everything that attenuates by absorption is indifferent to angle, except for the slightly longer optical path inside the glass. Everything that attenuates by interference is not. In a dielectric stack the reflection condition depends on the optical path between layers, which goes as n d cos θ', and the cut-off edge shifts towards the blue as the tilt increases:
λc(θ) = λc(0) · √(1 − sen2θ / nef2)
With nef ≈ 1.85, at 35 degrees the edge recedes by 5 percent. A cut designed at 690 nm ends up at 642 nm and eats part of the red channel. This happens in two different places, and it pays not to confuse them:
- In the ND filter screwed in front of the lens. The relevant angle is the half field angle: the corner of the frame reaches the filter tilted by arctan(21.6 / f) on full frame. A 28 mm puts the corners at 38 degrees; a 90 mm, at 13. If the ND has a dielectric IR cut, on a wide angle that cut invades the red in the corners and a radial gradient towards cyan appears, or towards magenta if the coating edge sat very close to the red.
- In the sensor filter. Here the angle is fixed not by the focal length but by the distance from the exit pupil to the sensor plane. A symmetrical rangefinder lens, with the pupil at 30 or 40 mm, tilts the corner beams 30 or 35 degrees. A retrofocus SLR lens of the same focal length, with the pupil at 60 or 70 mm, tilts them 18 or 20. This is the origin of the corner cyan drift that became famous with symmetrical wide angles on sensors with an aggressive dielectric cut.
The two drifts overlap, and neither can be corrected with a global white balance because they vary with position in the frame. They can be corrected with a colour-vignetting profile measured on a uniform surface, which is what cameras that can code the mounted lens do.
Corner drift from the angle of incidence
Corner drift against focal length, with the pupil held fixed
The exit pupil stays at the chosen value while the focal length is swept, because they are two independent things: the tilt at the sensor filter is set by the pupil, and the tilt at the ND by the focal length. That is why the bare-sensor line is flat and only the one including the ND moves. The difference between the two is the only thing that decides which filter to buy; the bands mark 3 and 8 percentage points. For the Q3 there is no published exit-pupil figure for the 43 mm: use the manual values.
The corner drift is computed on a uniform grey card, with the same white balance as at the centre. Without a dielectric filter on the sensor and with an absorbing or metal ND, the only angular effect left is the longer path through the absorbing glass, which blocks a little more infrared in the corners, of opposite sign and much smaller. The model assumes an aggressive dielectric cut; sensors designed for symmetrical lenses soften that edge and rely more on the absorbing glass, and cameras that code the lens correct the rest by profile.
Cómo medirlo con la cámara
How to measure it with the camera
No manufacturer publishes the transmittance curve beyond 700 nm. What exists are statements of mechanism, such as "equivalent attenuation in visible and infrared" or "infrared blocking layer", and qualitative comparisons of raw files. The camera lets you go further with three zero-cost tests. All require linear raw, manual exposure, fixed ISO, fixed white balance and black-level subtraction.
Medida puntual con un LED infrarrojo
Spot measurement with an infrared LED
A remote control emits in a narrow band, almost always at 940 nm; a security-camera illuminator, at 850. Photograph the LED in a dark room with and without the filter, same exposure, and read the mean value of the LED in the raw once the black is subtracted. Quantum efficiency and the sensor filter appear in numerator and denominator, so they cancel:
If with the filter nothing remains above the noise, the result is a bound: OD ≥ log10(DNwithout / 3σ). To get the value, lengthen the exposure with the filter by a known factor and add its logarithm. Four things invalidate the test: the remote emits bursts modulated at 38 kHz, not continuous light, so long exposures with the button held down are needed; the emission cone is around 15 degrees and any change of aim ruins the comparison; automatic exposure and JPEG are out; and at 940 nm the dynamic range is narrow because the sensor itself already cuts hard. What matters in the end is not OD(940) in isolation, but the excess relative to the density measured in the visible on the same filter.

The DN values are linear raw numbers with the black level already subtracted, averaged over the LED disc. If the value with the filter does not exceed three times the background noise, the calculator returns a lower bound instead of a measurement. The extra exposure is the factor by which you lengthened the time with the filter relative to the shot without it: one if you used the same time. The starting values are an example, not a measurement.

Tripod, same scene, manual white balance at a fixed Kelvin, same aperture and ISO. One shot without the filter at t and another with the filter at 2n t, with n the nominal stops. The per-channel ratio between the two linear images returns the effective density of each channel:
ODc = n log10 2 + log10 ( DNc,sin / DNc,con )
The differences between ODR, ODG and ODB are the filter's cast, visible and infrared together. And the dependence of those differences on the photographed object separates the two: a visible cast is the same on a grey card as on a leaf; an infrared cast is larger on the leaf.

The DN values are means of the undemosaiced Bayer mosaic, as given by RawDigger or dcraw -D -4 -T, over uniform, well-exposed patches far from saturation. The black level is subtracted here, not before. The match against the model compares the two per-channel differences with those each technology predicts at that density on the generic 1.0 mm sensor: it is an orientation, not a product identification. The starting values are an example generated with the model itself, not a measurement.

A scene with sunlit green vegetation and clear blue sky in the same frame. Measure the R/G ratio in the raw on the leaves and on the sky. If it rises only on the vegetation, there is leakage: chlorophyll is the scene's infrared emitter and the Rayleigh sky is not. The test fails with overcast sky, because clouds scatter by Mie and are nearly neutral up to the NIR, and it fails with vegetation in deep shade or dry.

The direction is the one a leak between 700 and 800 nm predicts: red up and blue down on the vegetation, not on the clouds. But the shot cannot prove it, for four accumulated reasons: the white balance was automatic and had already compensated part of the effect; overcast sky is not an infrared-free reference; the mosaic's channel ratios are not colorimetry, and the Bayer red filter already responds at 580 nm, so a leaf can give R/G close to 1 without pathology; and the dark vegetation mixes green leaves with dry grass, genuinely warm. The methodological lesson is that an isolated shot never settles the question. The pair of shots above does.
Modelo y límites
Model and limits
The calculations on this page are qualitative models with the right functional form and plausible magnitudes, useful for understanding the mechanism and the order of magnitude. They do not replace a measurement. This is what lies behind each curve:
- Spectral grid from 380 to 1100 nm in 5 nm steps. Illuminant: black body at 5600 K, without atmospheric absorption bands.
- Silicon quantum efficiency: linear interpolation between anchor points, with maximum at 550 to 600 nm and cut-off at 1100 nm.
- Bayer mosaic: red as a high-pass from 585 nm; green and blue Gaussian with secondary windows above 800 and 820 nm.
- Sensor filter: absorbing glass with OD proportional to thickness and maximum absorption between 800 and 950 nm, plus a dielectric reflection band of OD 2 and 360 nm width, with edge at 690 nm by default (the IRND's is OD 1.8 and 320 nm). Angular shift with nef = 1.85.
- ND filters: the nominal OD is multiplied by a shape function specific to each technology. The IRND adds a reflection band of OD 1.8 with edge at 705 nm. The variable ND is modelled as the minimum between the set density and the maximum density two polarisers can reach at that wavelength, about OD 4 in the visible and below 1 beyond 850 nm.
- Scene: tabulated reflectances for foliage, dry grass, synthetic fabric, skin and grey card; radiance proportional to λ−4 for clear sky and neutral for cloud.
- The colour shown in the swatches is the channel ratio normalised to the grey card, with no colour matrix. It serves to see the direction and size of the drift, not the final colour of a real camera.
- Verdict thresholds, the author's criterion and no standard at all. Cast: residual below 2 percentage points and infrared fraction below 2 % = neutral in practice; up to 6 pp or up to 8 % = a cast that depends on the object; above that = infrared leakage. Corners: less than 3 pp of drift added by the ND = imperceptible; more than 8 pp = visible on a smooth sky. Pair of shots: difference between patches below 0.03 in optical density = visible cast, above it = infrared signature.
- The residual is the difference between the deviation of a scene element and that of the grey card with the same filter: what is left after a global white balance. The worst case used by the verdict is taken among the chosen scene, foliage and black synthetic fabric.
- The corner drift attributable to the ND is the total drift minus that of the bare sensor with the same exit pupil. The sensor's part is corrected by the colour-vignetting profile in cameras that code the lens; the ND's part is not.
Qué es afirmación de fabricante y qué es medidaWhat is a manufacturer's claim and what is a measurement
- "Equivalent attenuation in visible and infrared" and "infrared blocking layer" are statements of mechanism by the manufacturers who use them. They indicate design, not a measured optical density.
- "High colour fidelity" says nothing about the infrared. It is a claim about the visible.
- That a manufacturer also sells a separate UV/IR-cut filter indicates that its ND, on its own, does not close the problem in every case.
- Comparisons published by users measure casts in raw files, which is a valid test but integrated over the whole band and scene-dependent. They are not spectral curves.
