Δv = Δd·m², with m the magnification at that distance; clamped to ±60 µm. The label above converts the offset to mm at the current subject distance.

Focus shift by aperture · in mm at the subject against the depth of field
Δv is the shift of best focus at the image plane (positive: the plane of focus moves behind the subject); Δd = Δv/m² is the same thing measured at the subject, at the current distance. The tolerance is the largest defocus the sharpness criterion admits at that aperture (N·c₀·(1 + m), or that of the MTF bisection), also carried to the subject: "absorbed" if Δv ≤ ½ tolerance, "bites" up to 1 tolerance, "out of focus" beyond. The "Coupling cam calibrated at f/" button above changes the aperture at which the shift is null. The catalogue fs values are editable estimates, not measurements.

Ring: drag for coarse movement, wheel for fine, wheel with Shift for very fine. The patch freezes below 0.7 m because the coupling cam has reached its mechanical stop. The patch displacement is drawn at true angular scale (one arcminute is about 0.33 px in the viewfinder), hence the loupe: in it the blue band is ±ε and, if the doubled bars fall inside it, your eye would take them for aligned. In blind mode the true distance is drawn at random and hidden: align with the loupe and shoot. The full derivation of the model and its numerical verification are in the manual.
A 1′ y a plena abertura: 35 f/2 → 3,5 µm; 50 f/1.4 → 10 µm; 75 f/1.4 → 23 µm; 90 f/2 → 23 µm; 135 f/3.4 → 31 µm.
Peor caso, no promedio
How it is computed
Rangefinder blind zone
The patch moves through an angle B·M·K·(1/d′ − 1/d), with B = 69.25 mm the mechanical base, M = 0.73 the finder magnification and K the magnifier (1, 1.25 or 1.4). The eye cannot tell while that angle stays below its acuity ε: the blind zone is |1/d′ − 1/d| < ε/(B·M·K), a fixed interval in dioptres that depends neither on the lens nor on the aperture. At 1′ without magnifier it is 5.8·10⁻⁶ mm⁻¹: with the subject at 3 m, the ring can sit anywhere between 2.95 and 3.05 m without the eye noticing.
Circle it induces
At the edge of the blind zone the image plane shifts by Δv ≈ f²·ε/(B·M·K) and the geometrical disc measures c ≈ Δv/N = f²·ε/(B·M·K·N). At 1′ and full aperture: 35 f/2 → 3.5 µm; 50 f/1.4 → 10 µm; 75 f/1.4 → 23 µm; 90 f/2 → 23 µm; 135 f/3.4 → 31 µm. Inverted, and leaving the Airy disc aside, it gives the minimum aperture for a circle c, N = f²·ε/(B·M·K·c): for 2 px (7.52 µm) that is f/1.9 with the 50, f/4.3 with the 75, f/6.2 with the 90 and f/14 with the 135. The verdict and the tables do not use this approximation but the exact calculation at both edges of the blind zone, with Airy in quadrature, focus shift and mechanical offset included: that is why the 50 f/1.4 comes out one stop further down in them (7.8 µm at f/2) and, with its focus shift active, further still.
Airy disc in quadrature
ctotal = √(c² + (2.44·λ·N)²) with λ = 550 nm. The Airy disc measures 1.34·N µm: at f/5.6 it is already 7.5 µm, the sensor's 2 px, so the "≤ 2 px" criterion is only attainable up to f/4 whatever the focusing system; at f/16 (21 µm) only the 30 µm criterion remains.
Depth of field
Hyperfocal H = f²/(N·c₀) + f; near limit d·(H − f)/(H + d − 2f) and far limit d·(H − f)/(H − d) around the plane of focus, with c₀ = 2 px, 30 µm or, under the MTF criterion, the largest defocus that keeps MTF66 ≥ threshold (by bisection). These are the formulas of programa-camara; here they serve only to be compared with the blind zone, the recomposing error and the focus shift.
Cosine error when recomposing
The subject is focused on axis and the camera swung through α: its axial distance becomes d·cos α, i.e. it comes closer by d·(1 − cos α) while the plane of focus does not move. It fits within the DoF while d·cos α ≥ dnear, whence αmax = arccos(dnear/d).
Focus shift
Δv = fs·(1 + k·m)·[(Nmax/Ncal)² − (Nmax/N)²]: null at the aperture Ncal the coupling cam is calibrated for, rearwards on stopping down and forwards on opening up; it grows with the subject magnification m. With the magnified EVF it plays no part, because focusing takes place at the working aperture on the sensor.
From image plane to subject
A shift Δv of the image plane is equivalent to Δd = Δv/m² at the subject, with m = f/(d − f). This is the conversion used by the mechanical offset and by the focus-shift table: 10 µm with a 50 mm are 3.6 mm at 1 m and 35 mm at 3 m.
Magnified EVF (Visoflex 2 · SL3-S with M adapter)
Defocus is detected when the geometrical disc exceeds cth pixels: the blind zone is |Δv| < N·cth·p·v/f, proportional to the aperture, and the circle at its edge is cth pixels plus the Airy disc. The same model applies to focusing an M lens on the SL3-S sensor through the adapter.
Psychometric eye
With the psychometric curve, detection is a Weibull P = 1 − 2^(−(Δ/ε)^3.5), with ε at 50 %; human focusing and the Monte Carlo stop where the eye no longer detects.
MTF chain
Total MTF = defocus OTF with diffraction (Hopkins integral, circular pupil) × lens aberration residual (interpolated from the published MTF at 10/20/40 lp/mm) × photosite aperture |sinc(π·p·ν)| with p = 3.76 µm. "MTF66" is its value at half Nyquist, 66.5 lp/mm.
Limits and assumptions
Worst case, not average
The verdict and the tables place the ring at the edge of the blind zone: it is the worst that can happen with an eye of acuity ε and no cam noise. The Monte Carlo table spreads the focusings within the zone and gives the real hit rate, always better than the worst case.
Estimates
The focus shifts of all lenses are editable estimates, not measurements, and so is the MTF of three of the eight (Thypoch, Nokton, LLL); that of the Leica lenses is rounded from their data sheets. The EVF threshold cth is a user assumption. An ordinal index of focus drift per lens, obtained by another route, is in the optical character of the M lenses.
Ideal eye and mechanics
The eye is an ideal vernier with threshold ε (0.6′ in good light, 1.8′ in dim light); patch contrast, fatigue and hand tremor are not modelled. The lens is a thin lens without field curvature or focus breathing; the cam is linear in 1/d apart from whatever offset and noise σ are set.
What is not here
The diffraction ceilings by aperture and file mode are in the sensor's diffraction tab; the general DoF and hyperfocal calculator, in programa-camara. Frame-line parallax at close range is a framing problem, not a focusing one, and is not modelled.
