Simulador de telémetro
para la Leica M11

Rangefinder simulator
for the Leica M11

Manual of use, physical model, verification and proposed improvements. What each panel computes, with which formulas, against what each block has been checked, and where the limits of the model lie. This revision brings in the full MTF chain — diffraction, lens aberration residual and photosite aperture — and the MTF sharpness criterion, which now serves as the principal reference. An annex closes the document with the Airy disc, the physical floor against which everything else is measured.

01Qué responde la herramienta

01What the tool answers

A coincidence rangefinder does not measure distance; it measures a parallax angle between two windows separated by the mechanical base, and presents it to the eye as a lateral displacement of the central patch. The eye decides that the two images coincide when the residual displacement falls below its acuity threshold. That residue, transformed by the lens fitted to the body, becomes defocus at the sensor.

The simulator quantifies that whole chain: for a given lens, aperture, subject distance and ring position, it computes the angular displacement of the rangefinder patch in minutes of arc, decides whether an eye of acuity ε would perceive it, and draws the resulting defocus disc over a matrix of M11 photosites with physical photometry. It also allows the depth of field band of the lens and the band of ring positions that the rangefinder cannot tell apart to be compared on one and the same distance scale. When the second is wider than the first, the rangefinder cannot guarantee focus however well adjusted it may be.

A schematic reproduction of the viewfinder showing the bright-line frames of the pair belonging to the lens fitted, at true angular scale (20 px per degree, scaled by the 0.73× magnification). The central patch shows the secondary image displaced horizontally by the computed parallax angle. One minute of arc amounts to 0.33 px on this canvas, so that the misalignment which matters is invisible here; the panel is there to give context, not to judge focus. Below 0.7 m the warning that the coupling cam has reached its stop appears.

This is the measuring instrument. It presents a vernier target: five bright vertical bars with the patch image superimposed at 55 % opacity and displaced by the same angle, over a rule graduated in minutes of arc (4.67 px per minute). The central blue band marks ±ε, the configured acuity of the eye: if the doubling of the bars falls within that band, an observer of that acuity would take the rangefinder patch to be aligned. The text above gives Δ with its sign, and the verdict.

3.3 · Focusing ring

A distance scale dragged past a fixed index, in logarithmic mapping from the minimum focusing distance of the lens out to ∞ (60 m is treated as infinity). Three levels of control: drag for coarse movement, the mouse wheel for fine, the wheel with Shift for very fine. The very fine level is necessary because the blind zone of the rangefinder at 3 m with ε = 1′ occupies 6 px of scale.

Three bands are drawn over the scale. The amber one is the depth of field of the lens at the chosen aperture, centred on the ring position, according to the sharpness criterion selected. The blue one is the blind zone of the rangefinder, centred on the true subject distance: the set of ring positions whose misalignment falls below ε. The red one shades the stretch below 0.7 m if the lens reaches it. The dotted blue mark indicates the true subject distance. In blind mode the blue band and the subject mark are hidden.

When a band is narrower than 3 px it is drawn at that minimum width so that it does not vanish; the numerical readout remains the exact one.

With the focusing system set to Visoflex the blue band turns green and stands for the zone that cannot be distinguished on the magnified sensor image. The scale toggle allows the ring to be seen in 1/d mapping, faithful to the real helicoid: in it the stretch from 3 m to infinity occupies 162 px of the 808 usable pixels of focus throw, and the stretch from 0.7 to 1 m occupies 208 px, which is why on the physical lens the adjustment at medium and long range is so critical. Besides dragging and the wheel, the ring responds to the arrow keys (with Shift, fine step; Home and End go to the extremes) and to pinch on a touch screen.

A grid of 15 × 15 photosites of 3.76 µm, 56.4 µm to a side. It shows the total defocus disc centred on a photosite, with the energy of the light point conserved: each photosite receives the fraction of the disc area that covers it, with gamma 2.2 for the display. A perfectly focused point lights one photosite to 100 %; a disc 274 µm across spreads the same energy over 5,000 photosites and the matrix goes black, with a label stating that the disc overflows and what percentage of the original peak remains. The dashed circles indicate the geometric disc (white) and the Airy disc (amber), and are drawn only if they fit within the canvas. The sub-pixel phase selector centres the disc on the centre of a photosite, on an edge or on a corner; the label states how many photosites receive more than 10 % of the energy. An Airy point of 1.9 µm lights one, two or four photosites depending on the phase, and the look of the final image depends on that accident as much as on focus.

It draws, from 0 to the Nyquist frequency of the sensor (133 lp/mm), four curves: the diffraction MTF at the current aperture; that of the lens in focus, that is, diffraction times the aberration residual interpolated from the published MTF; that of the photosite; and the total one with the defocus present. It marks half Nyquist (66 lp/mm), the chosen threshold, the value of MTF at 66 and the MTF50 frequency (the one at which the total MTF falls to 0.5). The slider sets the threshold (0.10 to 0.70, 0.30 by default). At the foot it states the provenance of the lens data, Leica datasheet or estimate.

3.7 · Curva por objetivo

3.7 · Per-lens curve

For every lens loaded it draws, as a function of aperture and with the ring placed at the edge of the blind zone of the active focusing system (the deterministic worst case), either the total circle (plus Airy, focus shift and mechanical offset; noise excluded) or, with the toggle, the MTF at 66 lp/mm. In total-circle mode the horizontal lines mark 2 px and 30 µm and the Airy curve is the floor; in MTF mode the line marks the threshold and the dashed curve is the diffraction-times-sensor ceiling at 66 lp/mm, which no lens can exceed. The selected lens is drawn with a thick stroke. All the curves converge towards Airy on stopping down and separate on opening up in proportion to f²/N; this is the synthesis of the whole tool in a single image, and it responds at once to changes of ε, distance, recomposition or offset.

The button “Simulate 1000 focus attempts” runs a thousand human focusing attempts (alignment error uniform within ±ε) with the subject at the current distance and with recomposition and focus shift active, and presents two things. On the left, the histogram of total c on a logarithmic scale from 1 to 300 µm, with the zones of the two criteria coloured and the median, the 90th percentile and the maximum given in the label. On the right, the table by aperture: for each aperture available on the lens, the minimum circle attainable with perfect focus at the ring (Airy plus focus shift), the percentage of shots with c ≤ 2 px, the percentage with c ≤ 30 µm, the percentage with MTF at 66 lp/mm above the threshold, the median of that MTF, the median of c and the total width of the depth of field under the active criterion. The column “c min” separates what may be laid at the door of the rangefinder from what is a physical floor: when c min exceeds the criterion, the rate is 0 % even with perfect focus. Any change of parameter invalidates the statistics, and the button has to be pressed again.

This table is the operational answer to the question that prompted the tool. With the Simera 75 f/1.4, subject at 3 m and ε = 1′, with neither recomposition nor focus shift: at f/1.4, 32 % of shots meet the 2 px criterion, at f/2 45 %, at f/2.8 54 %, at f/4 67 %; 100 % meet 30 µm at any aperture. The rate never reaches 100 % at 2 px because from f/5.6 onwards the Airy disc alone occupies 7.4 µm.

Lens selection by chips; the “+ add” button opens a dialogue with name, focal length, maximum aperture and minimum focusing distance. The true subject distance is set with a logarithmic slider from 0.5 to 30 m. The apertures on offer start at the maximum aperture of the lens. The acuity ε runs from 0.3′ to 2′ in steps of 1/60 of a minute. The magnifier (1.25× or 1.4×) multiplies the effective base length. The sharpness criterion switches between 2 px (7.56 µm, demanding, consistent with the sensor), 30 µm (the classic circle of confusion inherited from 35 mm film) and MTF at 66 lp/mm above the threshold, which has been adopted as the principal reference because it corresponds best to what is actually perceived. The active criterion governs the depth of field band on the ring, the depth of field column of the table and the MTF mode of the per-lens curve. When a lens is added, its MTF values at 10, 20 and 40 lp/mm at full aperture and at f/5.6 are requested as well.

The model of the eye admits two variants: a hard threshold (anything falling below ε is taken as aligned) or a psychometric function (Weibull detection probability with threshold ε at 50 % and slope 3.5, the usual form in vernier tasks). Three presets fix ε: good light 0.6′, indoors 1.0′, low light 1.8′. The focusing system switches between rangefinder and Visoflex, with a slider for the minimum defocus the eye can appreciate in the magnified EVF (0.5 to 4 px, 1.5 by default). Mechanical tolerance has two sliders: a constant offset for the body-and-lens pair (−60 to +60 µm at the image plane) and coupling cam noise σ (0 to 30 µm), drawn afresh for each shot. Focus shift adds the growth factor with magnification k (0 to 40). The recomposition slider α (0 to 25°) models the gesture of focusing on the subject with the central patch and then turning the camera to compose. The focus shift slider (0 to 120 µm) sets the displacement of best focus at the image plane between full aperture and a very small aperture; it starts at the value estimated for the lens fitted and can be overridden, disabled or returned to the lens value with the three adjacent buttons. This parameter is also requested when a lens is added.

Settings and added lenses are saved in the browser's local storage (the file runs locally, without restriction) and are restored on opening; the “Reset all” button clears them.

The three action buttons: “Align exactly” sets the ring to the true distance; “Focus like a human” leaves it at a uniformly random point inside the blind zone, which is what happens every time an observer of acuity ε takes the rangefinder patch to be aligned; “Blind mode” draws the true distance at random between 1 and 12 m, hides it, leaves the ring at a random position and shows the “Shoot” button, which reveals the error and the circle obtained.

Error de coseno al reencuadrar

Cosine error on recomposing

The rangefinder is aligned on the subject on the axis at distance d; when the camera is turned through an angle α the axial distance of the subject becomes d·cos α, while the plane of focus remains perpendicular to the axis at distance d′. The error introduced is d(1 − cos α), independent of the lens: 30.4 mm for 10° at 2 m, which with a 75 mm at f/1.4 amounts to 32 µm of circle, four times the depth of field at the 2 px criterion. Patch alignment is computed on d (before turning) and defocus on d·cos α (after). For small angles the variation of off-axis aberration is negligible beside this term.

The cosine bias δ = d(1 − cos α) has a fixed sign, but it adds to a rangefinder error e of unknown sign, uniform within ±E inside the blind zone. In a particular shot the result e − δ may be smaller than |e| if the ring fell short: one example with the 75 mm at 6.9 m, the ring 199 mm in front of the subject and a turn of 12° (δ = 152 mm), reduces the error to 47 mm and the circle from 17 to 5 µm. On average, however, the mean absolute error goes from E/2 to (E² + δ²)/(2E), which grows with δ, and the distribution of c shifts towards larger values.

Conscious compensation consists in turning the ring towards shorter distances, down to d·cos α, after aligning; or in stepping sideways instead of turning, which preserves the axial distance.

Δv_s(N, d) = fs · (1 + k·m) · [(N_máx/N_cal)² − (N_máx/N)²]
Δv_s(N, d) = fs · (1 + k·m) · [(N_máx/N_cal)² − (N_máx/N)²]

where fs is the shift between full aperture and a very small aperture at negligible magnification, in µm; m = f/(d − f) the magnification of the subject; k the growth factor with magnification (a slider, 15 by default, with which a 50 mm at 1 m has 1.8 times the shift it has at long range, and at 3 m 1.25 times); and N_cal the aperture the coupling cam is adjusted to (the selector “Cam adjusted to f/”, by default the maximum aperture). The shift vanishes at N_cal, is positive above it (best focus further away than the ring) and negative below. In Visoflex mode it is zero, because focusing is done on the sensor at the working aperture and the aberration is absorbed by the act of focusing itself.

Tolerancia mecánica

Mechanical tolerance

A constant offset δ (µm) is added to the position of the sensor at the image plane in every shot: it models the calibration error of the body-and-lens pair. Gaussian noise of standard deviation σ is drawn for each shot: it models the play in the roller and the repeatability of the coupling cam. With δ = 20 µm and the 75 mm at f/1.4 the circle with perfect focus is 14 µm; comparing that figure with the one the eye produces (23.7 µm for 1′) is the answer to whether it is worth having the camera adjusted.

Psychometric function

P(detectar Δ) = 1 − 2^(−(Δ/ε)^3,5)
P(detect Δ) = 1 − 2^(−(Δ/ε)^3.5)

It is 0.5 at Δ = ε, 0.06 at ε/2 and 0.9996 at 2ε. Human focusing is generated by rejection sampling: a position up to 2ε is proposed and accepted with probability 1 − P. Around 13 % of focus attempts fall outside ±ε, and the distribution of c loses its hard edge.

Visoflex

Visoflex

The observer detects defocus when the geometric circle exceeds c_th pixels in the magnified image. At the image plane the blind zone is |Δv| < N·c_th·p·v/f, proportional to the aperture, that is, a fixed fraction of the depth of focus. With c_th = 1.5 px and the 75 mm at f/1.4 and 3 m this comes to ±8.1 µm at the image plane and 25 mm of distance, against the 104 mm of the rangefinder blind zone with ε = 1′; at f/8 it is ±46 µm, but the depth of field already contains them. The consequence is that in Visoflex the hit rate is 100 % at full aperture and falls only through diffraction, with neither focus shift nor mechanical offset intervening.

The quadratic form is that of third-order spherical aberration, whose contribution to focus scales with the square of the pupil height. The true plane of sharp focus then lies at the distance d_s such that v(d_s) = v(d′) − Δv_s, and both the depth of field band and the circle are computed with respect to it. The default values (Noctilux 80 µm, Nokton 35/1.2 55 µm, Simera 75 35 µm, LLL 50 replica 30 µm, Summilux 50 ASPH 25 µm, Summicron 90 15 µm, Summicron 35 ASPH 10 µm, APO Telyt 0) are order-of-magnitude estimates drawn from reviews and from the typical behaviour of each design; they are best measured on one's own sample with a tilted ruler and substituted. For reference, 80 µm at the image plane of a 50 mm focused at 1 m amounts to 32 mm of displacement of the plane of sharp focus.

Monte Carlo

Monte Carlo

Each human focus attempt takes an error uniform in 1/d within ±ε/(B·M·K), computes the resulting ring position and evaluates the total circle with recomposition and focus shift active. This is repeated a thousand times per aperture. The distribution of c at full aperture is approximately uniform between the Airy disc and the maximum value f²ε(1+m)²/(B·M·K·N), which makes the hit rate for a criterion c₀ approximately c₀/c_máx.

Ángulo aparente del parche

Apparent angle of the patch

The coupling cam in the body only responds down to 0.7 m, so that d_RF = max(d′, 0.7 m). The angular displacement the eye sees is the difference of parallaxes multiplied by the total magnification:

θ = B·M·K·(1/d_RF − 1/d)
θ = B·M·K·(1/d_RF − 1/d)

Cadena de MTF

MTF chain

The circle of confusion criterion treats defocus as a disc with a hard edge and adds diffraction in quadrature. MTF describes the same phenomenon exactly, and in the domain in which sharpness is judged: contrast at each spatial frequency ν. The simulator models it as the product of three factors, the incoherent cascade approximation, valid so long as the lens is well corrected:

MTF(ν) = OTF_desenf(ν, N, Δv) · R(ν, N) · MTF_sensor(ν)
MTF(ν) = OTF_desenf(ν, N, Δv) · R(ν, N) · MTF_sensor(ν)

The first factor is the transfer function of a defocus Δv with diffraction for a circular pupil (Hopkins), computed as the autocorrelation of the pupil with the quadratic phase term:

OTF(s) = (4/π) ∫₀1−s √(1 − (x+s)²) · cos(4k·W₂₀·s·x) dx,
con s = ν·λ·N, W₂₀ = Δv/(8N²), k = 2π/λ
OTF(s) = (4/π) ∫₀1−s √(1 − (x+s)²) · cos(4k·W₂₀·s·x) dx,
with s = ν·λ·N, W₂₀ = Δv/(8N²), k = 2π/λ

With Δv = 0 it reduces to the exact diffraction MTF (2/π)(arccos s − s√(1−s²)), and with large Δv it tends to the geometric disc 2J₁(πcν)/(πcν), phase reversals included, which are truncated to zero. The diffraction cut-off is 1/(λN): 1300 lp/mm at f/1.4 and 114 at f/16.

The second factor R is the aberration residual of the lens, defined as the ratio between the MTF published by the manufacturer at the centre of the field (at 10, 20 and 40 lp/mm, at the best focus of each aperture) and the diffraction MTF at that aperture. Values are given at full aperture and at f/5.6; between the two they are interpolated in the logarithm of N; above f/5.6 R tends towards 1 (the lens becomes diffraction limited); and in frequency it is interpolated linearly with R(0) = 1 and extrapolated above 40 lp/mm as exp[ln R₄₀ · (ν/40)1.3]. The data for the Summicron 35, Summilux 50, Summicron 90, APO Telyt 135 and Noctilux 0.95 come from the Leica datasheets, rounded; those for the Simera 75, Nokton 35/1.2 and LLL 50 are estimates by analogy with designs of the same kind, and are marked as such in the panel.

Un ejemplo de lo que sale: para el Summilux 50 a f/1.4, MTF publicada de 0,55 a 40 pl/mm y difracción de 0,96, luego R₄₀ = 0,57 y R₆₆ = 0,34; con difracción y sensor la MTF total a 66 pl/mm con foco perfecto es 0,29, y con 30 µm de desenfoque baja a 0,17. La MTF50 pasa de 43 a 25 pl/mm.
An example of what comes out: for the Summilux 50 at f/1.4, a published MTF of 0.55 at 40 lp/mm against a diffraction value of 0.96, whence R₄₀ = 0.57 and R₆₆ = 0.34; with diffraction and sensor the total MTF at 66 lp/mm with perfect focus is 0.29, and with 30 µm of defocus it drops to 0.17. MTF50 goes from 43 to 25 lp/mm.

The third factor is the photosite aperture, |sinc(π p ν)| with p = 3.76 µm: 0.90 at 66 lp/mm and 0.64 at Nyquist. Neither the Bayer filter nor demosaicing is modelled.

Under this criterion the depth of field is defined as the range of distances over which MTF(66) ≥ threshold; the maximum admissible defocus Δv_máx is obtained by bisection and converted into distances through the conjugate relation. It may be empty: if the threshold is not reached even with perfect focus, as happens with most lenses at full aperture with a threshold of 0.30, the band does not appear and the table reads 0 %. The advantage over the 2 px criterion is that this floor is set by the real lens rather than by an arbitrary disc size, and that from f/8 onwards the criterion remains attainable for as long as diffraction allows: the diffraction-times-sensor ceiling at 66 lp/mm is 0.84 at f/1.4, 0.67 at f/5.6, 0.46 at f/11 and 0.27 at f/16.

Fotometría de la matriz

Photometry of the matrix

With r the radius of the disc in pixel units and A = π r² its area, the signal of photosite (i, j) is the fraction of its area covered by the disc divided by A. The sum over all photosites is 1 while the disc fits within the grid; this has been checked numerically to lie between 0.98 and 1.00 for diameters from 1.9 to 50 µm (the small loss at 1.9 µm is the sampling error of the smallest disc with 24 × 24 sub-samples).

The rangefinder cannot place the plane of focus inside the depth of field with any guarantee at that aperture. At f/2.8 the depth of field becomes 66 mm and at f/4 94 mm, by then comparable to the blind zone.

The lens is modelled as a thin lens with both pupils in the same plane. For real retrofocus and telephoto designs, distances are measured from the sensor plane and the separation between principal planes changes Δv slightly; the effect on c is of second order over the range 0.7 m to ∞.

The f-number is taken as nominal. At close range the effective f-number is N(1+m); for the 75 mm at 0.7 m, m = 0.12 and the Airy disc is 12 % larger than the one shown. The geometric circle already incorporates this effect by construction.

Combining geometry and diffraction in quadrature is an acceptable approximation away from the region where the two are comparable; a real point spread function would require integrating the diffraction of a defocused pupil.

Focus shift is modelled with a law quadratic in 1/N and linear in magnification; a real lens may depart from both, and the coefficients are estimates that are best measured on one's own sample. The cosine error ignores off-axis aberration and field curvature, which at 10° with a 35 mm are no longer negligible in classic designs.

The psychometric function uses a fixed slope, and ε is chosen by hand from three presets; there is no model of patch luminance and contrast from which ε might be derived from the scene. Detection in Visoflex is modelled with a threshold in pixels independent of EVF magnification and of subject contrast. The Visoflex blind zone is taken as uniform; in practice the user oscillates around focus and the real distribution is more concentrated at the centre. Neither field curvature nor the variation of off-axis aberrations is modelled.

The MTF chain assumes separability between aberrations and defocus, which is not exact; it uses the manufacturer's design MTF at the centre of the field, not that of the particular sample; and for lenses without published data the values are estimates that are best replaced. The MTF published at f/5.6 is computed at the best focus of that aperture, so it already incorporates focus shift; the simulator applies its own fs model on top, on the ring position, which is consistent because the rangefinder does not follow that best focus, but implies that the residual R must not include defocus a second time.

Acuity ε is treated as a hard threshold. A psychophysical model would give a detection probability as a function of θ/ε.

From a point on the subject a spherical wave reaches the lens; after the lens another leaves, converging towards the image point. The diaphragm clips that wavefront to a circle of diameter D. By the Huygens–Fresnel principle the clipped front is equivalent to a continuum of secondary sources distributed across the aperture, and what arrives at each point of the sensor is the coherent sum of all of them with their phases.

At the geometric image point all the contributions arrive in phase and the amplitude is at its maximum. For a point displaced by an angle θ from the axis, the sources at one edge of the aperture arrive with a path delay D·sin θ relative to those at the opposite edge, and the contributions begin to cancel. Formally the amplitude at the focal plane is the Fourier transform of the pupil function. For a uniformly illuminated circular pupil:

U(θ) ∝ 2·J₁(x)/x, con x = π·D·sen θ/λ
U(θ) ∝ 2·J₁(x)/x, with x = π·D·sin θ/λ

J₁(x) vanishes for the first time at x = 3.832. Solving, the first dark ring falls at the angle

θ₁ = 1,22·λ/D
θ₁ = 1.22·λ/D

which is the angular resolution of the system, the diffraction limit. At the sensor, placed at distance f from the pupil (v at finite distance), that angle becomes a radius r₁ = f·θ₁ = 1.22·λ·f/D. Focal length and pupil diameter merge into the f-number, and the diameter out to the first zero is

Ø_Airy = 2,44·λ·N
Ø_Airy = 2.44·λ·N

Con λ = 550 nm: 1,3 µm a f/0.95, 1,9 a f/1.4, 2,7 a f/2, 3,8 a f/2.8, 5,4 a f/4, 7,5 a f/5.6, 10,7 a f/8, 14,8 a f/11, 21,5 a f/16, 29,5 a f/22.

Only wavelength and f-number come into it. With λ = 550 nm: 1.3 µm at f/0.95, 1.9 at f/1.4, 2.7 at f/2, 3.8 at f/2.8, 5.4 at f/4, 7.5 at f/5.6, 10.7 at f/8, 14.8 at f/11, 21.5 at f/16, 29.5 at f/22. It does not depend on focal length (a 35 mm and a 135 mm at f/4 give the same disc in micrometres), nor on sensor size, nor on the quality of the lens: a perfect lens produces exactly this disc, and a defective one something larger. With red light at 650 nm the disc grows by 18 %; with blue at 450 nm it shrinks by 18 %; in white light the discs of each colour superimpose and the edge is left faintly tinted. At close range the effective f-number is N(1+m) and the disc grows in the same proportion: 12 % with the 75 mm at 0.7 m.

A.3 · What is inside the disc

The diameter 2.44·λN is a convention: the intensity is not cut off there, it vanishes and rises again. The central disc contains 83.8 % of the energy; the first bright ring 7.2 %, the second 2.8 %, and the series continues indefinitely with decreasing terms. Measured at half height, the central peak has a width of 1.03·λN, less than half the diameter out to the first zero. This is why combining the geometric disc with the Airy disc in quadrature, as the simulator does, is only an approximation: it mixes a disc of hard edge and uniform intensity with a bell surrounded by rings.

With photosites of 3.76 µm, at f/1.4 the disc fits entirely within one photosite and the point is recorded as a single lit pixel (two or four if it falls on an edge or a corner). At f/4 the central disc occupies a little over one photosite and the rings already spread energy into the neighbours. At f/8 the central disc spans three photosites side to side and at f/16 nearly six: the image is diffraction limited irrespective of focus.

A.5 · Resolución: el criterio de Rayleigh

A.5 · Resolution: the Rayleigh criterion

Two points are held to be resolved when the maximum of one falls on the first zero of the other, that is, when they are separated by 1.22·λN at the sensor. Under that condition the sum of the two profiles shows a dip of 26 % between the two peaks. At smaller separations the sum is a single broadened peak. The figure shows the three cases at f/2.8: twice the separation, the Rayleigh separation, and 0.73 times the Rayleigh separation.

The 2 px sharpness criterion amounts to 7.56 µm, and the Airy disc matches that figure at f/5.6 (7.5 µm) and exceeds it from f/8. Beyond that point no focus, however perfect, meets the criterion: the “≤ 2 px” column of the statistics table falls to 0 % because of a physical floor, not because of the rangefinder, and the “c min” column makes that visible. The 30 µm criterion is not reached until f/22.

Geometric defocus and most aberrations (spherical goes as D³, coma as D²) diminish on stopping down, while diffraction grows as 1/D. The sum passes through a minimum. For the 75 mm f/1.4 at 3 m with an alignment error of 1′, the minimum of the total circle lies between f/4 and f/5.6, and with an observer of acuity 0.5′ it moves to f/2.8. It is the optimum aperture of eye, body and lens together, and it lies below the traditional f/8 because the M11 sensor has a pixel pitch that makes diffraction visible sooner than film did.
