The camera is not a neutral tool: it carries a program, a built-in decision policy that chooses shutter time, aperture and ISO for you. This page makes it literally visible: at each light level, the diagram draws which t/N pair the automation picks under its philosophy, overlays what your intention demands — frozen motion, depth of field — and marks where the program decides against you. The notion is Flusser’s: the lucid photographer does not execute the program; they play against the apparatus.
The ISO cost is counted in stops of highlight range from the diagram’s ISO 100 reference. The measured read noise and dynamic range of each body are not replicated here: they live in the sensor sheet. Base ISO and the dual-gain point used above come from it too.
Your point is free in both directions: ISO is not one more setting, it is what the exposure demands once you have fixed t and N, ISO = 100·22log₂N + log₂(1/t) − EV. Nothing goes below ISO 100: there the pair overexposes.

The cost of high ISO is paid in noise: the signal-to-noise ratio falls roughly as √(signal), and every doubling of ISO trims one stop off the dynamic range. The quantitative treatment per body lives in the sensor sheet.
Exposición. EV = log₂(N²/t) − log₂(ISO/100).
Exposure. EV = log₂(N²/t) − log₂(ISO/100). At ISO 100 correct exposure demands N²/t = 2EV: each diagonal of the diagram is one constant EV, and every t/N pair on it exposes identically.
Classic P. In dim light, N = Nwide and long t; once t reaches the camera shake threshold 1/f, each extra stop of light is split half to t and half to N (the typical diagonal of the program line, the built-in program shift) up to N = 16; beyond that, t alone, down to 1/8000. P with stabiliser: identical with a 1/(f/4) threshold, two stops of margin. Values are continuous, with no rounding to third stops.
A + Auto-ISO.
A + Auto-ISO. You set N. The camera lengthens t down to the chosen Auto-ISO floor (1/f, 1/(2f), 1/(4f) or a fixed time); then it holds t and raises ISO = 100·2Δ up to the ceiling; only when that is exhausted does it lengthen t again. The coloured band on the diagram marks the EVs at which it is raising ISO.
Movimiento.
Motion. With magnification m = f/(d−f), as in the rangefinder, the blur on the sensor is b = v·t·f/(d−f); your intention demands b ≤ bmax (2 pixels of the chosen body — 7.52 µm on M11 and Q3, 11.88 on the SL3-S, 5.94 on its multishot — or the classic 30 µm), whence tmax = bmax·(d−f)/(v·f). The region t > tmax is shaded as motion blur.
Depth of field. The repository’s own formulae: hyperfocal H = f²/(N·c₀) + f; limits dn = d(H−f)/(H+d−2f) and df = d(H−f)/(H−d), with c₀ = 30 µm by default. Nmin is the smallest N whose depth of field covers the requested interval, solved by bisection over those formulae; for landscape (df = ∞) there is a closed form, Nmin = f²/(c₀·(d−f)). The region N < Nmin is shaded as insufficient depth of field.
Camera shake. The 1/f rule is a convention, not a measurement; here it is calibrated and declared. If at 50 mm, 1/50 s and 30 µm of blur the rule is taken as good, the implied angular speed of the pulse is ω₀ = b/(f·t) = 0.03/(50·0.02) = 0.03 rad/s. Each stop of support or stabilisation halves it: ω = ω₀/2support, and the time you can hold is tshake = bmax/(f·ω), with f in mm and bmax in mm. At pixel level the result is harsh: with bmax = 2 px the 1/f rule falls two stops short — at 50 mm handheld, tshake = 1/199, that is 1/(4f) — which is exactly the option the M11 offers in its Auto-ISO menu. It is a threshold, not a promise: the spread between photographers is enormous.
The sensor’s critical aperture. Stopping down has a ceiling that is not about exposure but about resolution: when the Airy disc matches the pixel pitch, Ncrit = p/(1.22·λ) with λ = 0.55 µm, stopping down further no longer buys sharpness. That gives f/5.6 at 3.76 µm (M11 and Q3), f/8.9 at 5.94 µm (SL3-S) and f/4.4 at 2.97 µm (the 96 Mpx multishot). The zone above that line is shaded on the diagram: when the verdict tells you to stop down to f/11 or f/16 for depth of field, it is telling you to pay in diffraction. The quantitative treatment — effective megapixels, MTF, Airy disc — is not repeated here: it lives in the diffraction sheet.
The ISO you need, and in stops. With t and N fixed, exposure leaves no choice: ISOreq = 100·22log₂N + log₂(1/t) − EV. If your intention asks for t ≤ min(tmax, tshake) and N ≥ Nmin, that is the ISO that executes it; if it exceeds your ceiling, you are k = log₂(ISOreq/ceiling) stops short, and those must be paid in another currency: open the lens, accept 2k times the blur, or ask for less depth. The three bars count exactly that, in stops. The ISO cost is measured in stops of highlight range from ISO 100; above the body’s dual-gain point (M11 200, Q3 400, SL3-S 640) read noise drops and the last stops are cheaper than the bar suggests.
The program’s first decision: what counts as “correct exposure”. Before sharing the light out between t, N and ISO, the apparatus has already decided how much light there is, and it does so assuming the world reflects 18%. It does not. The dominant reflectance shifts the reading: EVmetered = EVreal + bias, with +2 on snow or beach, −1.5 on a backlit subject metered on the subject, and −1 in a dark interior with a window. The whole program is computed on the metered EV, which is what the camera believes; the diagram also draws the real scene’s diagonal as a white dashed line, and the verdict says how many stops of under- or overexposure lie between them. This is the Flusserian part: the automation does not only pick the t/N pair, it first picks what counts as correct.
The bodies. The pixel pitch sets both the 2 px criterion (7.52 µm on the M11 and Q3, 11.88 on the SL3-S, 5.94 on its multishot) and the critical aperture. The shutter ceiling belongs to the body, not to the diagram: 1/4000 mechanical on the M11 (1/16000 electronic), 1/2000 on the Q3’s leaf shutter, 1/8000 on the SL3-S; the axis still reaches 1/8000 and whatever the body cannot reach is drawn as a dead band. Base ISO (64 on the M11, 100 on the others) does not move the diagonals, which are EV100 by definition: it is extra highlight headroom, not a different exposure.
