How it folds: the booklet imposition
Un cuadernillo grapado no se imprime en orden de lectura. Cada hoja lleva cuatro páginas —dos por cara— y esas cuatro están muy separadas dentro del zine: en uno de ocho páginas, la primera hoja imprime la 8 y la 1 por delante y la 2 y la 7 por detrás. La regla es corta. En la hoja s de un cuadernillo de N páginas, el anverso lleva N−2s+2 a la izquierda del pliegue y 2s−1 a la derecha; el dorso lleva 2s a la izquierda y N−2s+1 a la derecha. Cada pareja suma siempre N+1: por eso la última página acaba pegada a la primera, y por eso el total tiene que ser múltiplo de cuatro.
A saddle-stitched booklet is not printed in reading order. Each sheet carries four pages — two per side — and those four sit far apart inside the zine: in an eight-page one, the first sheet prints 8 and 1 on the front and 2 and 7 on the back. The rule is short. On sheet s of an N-page booklet, the front carries N−2s+2 to the left of the fold and 2s−1 to the right; the back carries 2s to the left and N−2s+1 to the right. Each pair always adds up to N+1: that is why the last page ends up against the first, and why the total has to be a multiple of four.

El anverso [8 | 1] y el dorso [2 | 7] sólo casan si la hoja se voltea como se pasa una página: girando sobre el eje vertical, de modo que la mitad derecha del anverso quede justo detrás de la mitad izquierda del dorso. En un documento A4 apaisado ese giro es el volteo por el borde corto —el borde de 210 mm—, no por el largo; es exactamente lo que documenta el «plegado de libro» de Word. En el formato A5 apaisada el documento es A4 vertical y el cuadernillo se hojea hacia arriba, así que hace falta la voltereta sobre el eje horizontal: en A4 vertical eso vuelve a ser el borde corto. La regla es la misma en los dos formatos. Si tu driver hace lo contrario, cambia el selector a borde largo: el dorso sale girado 180° para compensar. Y antes de tirar doce hojas, gasta una con el pliego de prueba: al doblarla, la página 2 tiene que quedar justo detrás de la 1.
The front [8 | 1] and the back [2 | 7] only match if the sheet is turned the way you turn a page: about the vertical axis, so the right half of the front lands right behind the left half of the back. In a landscape A4 document that turn is the short-edge flip — the 210 mm edge — not the long one; it is exactly what Word documents for its “book fold”. In the landscape A5 format the document is portrait A4 and the booklet is leafed upwards, so what you need is the tumble about the horizontal axis: on portrait A4 that is, again, the short edge. The rule is the same in both formats. If your driver does the opposite, switch the selector to long edge: the back side then comes out rotated 180° to compensate. And before wasting twelve sheets, spend one on the test sheet: when you fold it, page 2 must land right behind page 1.
