Cómo usar la herramienta de exposición larga

How to use the long-exposure tool

What each control means, how to read the figures, why panning and the ghost town are judged by different criteria, and what the page does not compute. With the formulae in the open, so you can argue with them.

01

Para qué sirve

What it is for

Long-exposure cheat sheets give fixed times. Pit Haupert's, the source of the six techniques in this tool, says 1/15 s for panning, a quarter of a second for light trails and thirty to sixty seconds to empty a square. They are good starting points, but a fixed time is only right for one particular speed, distance and focal length.

At 35 mm and ten metres, the same 1/15 s leaves 87 px of blur with a pedestrian, 310 px with a cyclist and 869 px with a city car. Same recipe, three different photographs.

The tool turns the recipe round: you choose the effect, and it returns the time you need in your scene, how many pixels that streak will measure, whether you can hold it with what you are carrying, and what filter you need to get there.

Las tres cifras que hay que entender

The three figures to understand

1 · El arrastre del sujeto

1 · The subject's blur

A subject at distance d moving at speed v across the frame sweeps an angle v/d per second. Projected on the sensor and divided by the pixel pitch, that is the length of the streak it leaves:

b = f · v · t / (d · p) [px] · f focal (mm), v velocidad (m/s), t tiempo (s), d distancia (m), p paso de píxel (mm) [px] · f focal length (mm), v speed (m/s), t time (s), d distance (m), p pixel pitch (mm)

The whole page hangs from that formula. Notice what it says: blur grows with focal length and speed, and falls with distance. Stepping three metres back or switching to a 28 mm has the same effect as shortening the time, and is often easier.

2 · La trepidación

2 · Shake

Your hands are not still: they tremble with a residual angular speed modelled here as ω₀ = 0.03 rad/s clean handheld. Each rung of support or each stop of stabilisation halves it. The blur comes from the same formula, with ω instead of v/d:

b_trep = f · ω · t / p · ω = ω₀ / 2^(pasos de apoyo) · ω = ω₀ / 2^(support stops)

It is the same model and the same constant used by the camera's program. Not by accident: if two sheets on this site modelled tremor differently, they would contradict each other the moment you put them side by side.

3 · El criterio de nitidez: dos píxeles

3 · The sharpness criterion: two pixels

Anything blurring less than two pixels is taken as sharp, which is one line pair at the sensor's Nyquist. It is a good deal stricter than the classic 1/focal rule: at 35 mm on the M11 it gives 1/140 s instead of 1/35 s. The 1/focal rule was invented for a contact print; sixty megapixels see what it could afford to ignore.

Cuándo relajarloWhen to relax it

If the picture is headed for a screen or a small print, the real criterion is softer and the time lengthens in the same proportion: four pixels double the time, eight quadruple it. The size at which each file is actually used is in from sensor to paper.

03

Los controles

The controls

A
Técnica
Technique

Picks how much blur you want. Each technique asks for a different amount, from the 60 px of the flash freeze to the 500 of light trails. The Free option leaves the target at 110 px so you can compare whatever you like.

B
Cuerpo
Body

Changes three things at once: the pixel pitch, which turns millimetres into pixels; the stabilisation available, which moves to the checkbox beside it; and the focal length, because the Q3 43 has it fixed at 43 mm and choosing that body locks the field to it. Going back to an interchangeable-lens body restores the focal length you had.

C
Focal y distancia
Focal length and distance

They enter the formula as a ratio, f/d, so all that matters is how much of the frame the subject fills. Doubling the focal length and doubling the distance cancel out.

D
Velocidad del sujeto
Subject speed

The presets run from pedestrian (1.4 m/s) to train (40), and each also carries the typical distance at which that subject is photographed: six metres for a pedestrian, fifteen for a city car, thirty-five for a train from the opposite platform. A reasonable starting point you can change by hand the moment you press it. Each preset also carries a silhouette for the frame further down: a 1.70 m person for pedestrian and runner, a cyclist for bike, a 4.5 m car for city and road, a 20 m train for the train.

Mind one thing: the formula assumes the subject crossing the frame. If it comes head on the blur is far smaller and the page overestimates it; multiply by the sine of the angle to the axis.

E
Apoyo
Support

The ladder of section 07, and only that: what you do with your hands. The four rungs cost nothing.

F
Estabilización del cuerpo
Body stabilisation

A separate checkbox, because it is not a rung of support but a property of the body: it adds to whatever your hands do. It is only offered if the body has it, and with the M11 it appears off and greyed out. The preference survives a change of body, so passing through the M11 does not switch it off for good.

G
Luz y diafragma
Light and aperture

They only enter the last sum, the filter one. The EV is the scene's at ISO 100: the presets run from city night (EV 5) to sun (EV 15).

04

Las seis técnicas, y una más

The six techniques, and one more

Four of the cheat sheet's six are solved the same way: they ask for a streak length and the tool solves for time. Two are not, and it is worth knowing why. The seventh is not on the sheet and fills the gap between the third and the sixth: still camera, and the subject leaves a visible trace.

Panning: judged by the tracking error

In panning you move the camera on purpose, so asking whether your hand trembles makes no sense: what decides is how well you follow the subject. A tracking error of 15 % of the movement is assumed, so the background takes the whole streak and the subject only that fraction. With 110 px of background, the subject comes out at 17: clean.

That also explains why panning fails with a telephoto. The error percentage does not change, but the absolute movement grows with focal length, so 15 % of a lot is still a lot. The tool warns when the subject passes twenty pixels.

Ghost town: judged by time, not by blur

This is the only one not decided by streak length. For someone to disappear it is not enough that they blur: their light has to spread so thin that it does not stand out against the background. A person only covers a given point of the frame while they take to cross their own width, w/v, so their contrast over that point is divided by t·v/w.

t = 40 · w / v · w ≈ 0,5 m de ancho aparente · 40× baja el rastro unos 5,3 pasos · w ≈ 0.5 m apparent width · 40× drops the trace by some 5.3 stops

The sum carries neither focal length nor distance, and that is why the thirty-second recipe works in any square. With someone strolling at 1.4 m/s it comes to fourteen seconds; the recipe's thirty also cover whoever stops to look at a shop window, which is what really ruins the picture.

Still camera, the subject leaves a trace: measured in subject widths

It is the case the cheat sheet does not name: you aim, stay still, and the people passing leave their trail. It is not the same as light trails. A headlight is so much brighter than the scene that its trail stays visible however long it gets; a person reflects light, and spreads it along the path as they move. If the trace is k subject widths long, no pixel at the centre has it covered for more than 1/k of the exposure, so the silhouette keeps at most that 1/k of its brightness. With small k there is only a soft outline (technique 3); with k = 40 nothing is left (the ghost town). This one lies in between.

b = 1,5 · w · w = ancho del sujeto en píxeles del sensor · el centro conserva el 67 % del brillo · w = subject width in sensor pixels · the centre keeps 67 % of its brightness

The target is a trace one and a half times the subject's width: you can see it moves, the edges melt and you can still tell who it is. Since it is measured in the subject's own widths, the time depends on the preset's silhouette (a person, a car) and not on the sensor: a person at 1.4 m/s asks for the time they take to cover 0.75 m, about 0.5 s, at any distance and with any focal length.

Congelado con flash y zoom burst

Flash freeze and zoom burst

Of these two, the tool only computes the ambient part. The split between existing light and flash, each body's sync speed and the pulse clipping at high speeds are computed in the flash optical bench. Zoom burst does not measure subject speed: the streak is radial and its length depends on how far you move the zoom, so the figure that comes out is indicative and asks for a tripod in any case.

05

El veredicto, línea a línea

The verdict, line by line

The first thing under the controls is the answer, large: the time the effect asks for, a tag saying whether that time is viable with the chosen support, and the blur in pixels. The tag takes four values: handheld (green), needs support (red: it cannot be held with the current support, climb a rung or two), needs a tripod (red: the technique itself demands it, as light trails or the ghost town do) and, in panning only, tracking error with its pixels, because there what rules is not tremor but how well you follow the subject. Below it, the detail reads top to bottom in three fixed parts.

06

El fotograma y la gráfica

The frame and the chart

El fotograma

The frame

The large rectangle is the whole frame, with the 3:2 proportion of the 36 × 24 mm format. Inside it there is no smeared dot but the subject at the size it really has on the sensor: the preset's silhouette (person, cyclist, car or train) drawn with the height and length in pixels that follow from focal length and distance, then swept along its blur. That shows what matters: a 1.70 m person six metres away with a 35 mm stands about 1,600 pixels tall on the M11, and a 110-pixel blur barely softens the outline; the same blur on a 300-pixel silhouette destroys it. Under the frame you read the subject's measurements in pixels and, in the corner, a 1 m bar in its plane gives the scale.

The dotted outline marks where the subject stood still. Three vertical marks past its leading edge place the end of the trace at half your time, your time and double, each with its pixels: that is the effect's sensitivity to the shutter, without touching the slider. A red edge on the right warns that the trace runs off the frame, which is when the subject crosses it entirely and is lost.

Who moves depends on the technique, and the drawing honours it with a fixed code: amber is your subject and grey is whatever moves around it. In light trails, ghost town and free mode the subject moves with the camera still, and leaves its trace. With flash, in addition, the burst freezes it crisp at the end of its path (rear curtain) and the ambient light leaves the faint trail behind. In panning the subject also moves, but the camera follows it, and the frame shows the scene as it is: the dotted outline is where it stood when the shutter opened, the crisp silhouette is where it gets to when it closes, with a faint trail in between, and the grey lamp posts do not move. What ends up in the picture because you followed it goes in the boxes on the right: the subject crisp but for the tracking error (15 % of the blur) and the background smeared the same pixels the subject advanced. In static subject, moving scene it is the other way round: your subject, a standing person, does not move, and the grey ones of the preset (pedestrians, cars, a train) pass in front and leave the trace. The ½, your-time and ×2 marks always say how far the trace that rules gets, and the second detail box magnifies the picture's background (panning) or your tremor on the subject (the rest).

The dashed rectangle around the leading edge is the zoom window: the 1,200 pixels the detail box on the right magnifies. It sits on that edge because that is where the picture is decided: there the crisp outline turns into a gradient as many pixels wide as the blur. Below, the second box draws the same window with your own tremor instead of the subject's motion, in cyan and at the same scale. Comparing them is the quickest way to see whether the blur that will show is the subject's or yours.

The sweep is computed the way the sensor does it: with uniform motion, each pixel's opacity is the fraction of the exposure time during which the subject covered it (a box filter along the path). If the blur is ten times the silhouette's length, each pixel gets a tenth of the light. That is why, in the ghost town, the person becomes a barely hinted band instead of a bright streak, and why it vanishes from the real photograph. The only licence is a minimum opacity floor of 8 %, so the band stays visible and you know where it passed.

La gráfica

The chart

Two curves against shutter time, both on a log scale. The amber one is the subject's blur; the cyan one, your tremor with the chosen support. Where the cyan one crosses two pixels is your longest handheld time, marked with a dashed vertical. The background bands say what each height means: below two pixels it is invisible, up to twenty it is a carelessly blurred subject, from a hundred it is a streak you decided on.

The interesting thing is the gap between the two curves: it is the margin you have for the blur that shows to be the subject's and not yours. If they touch, the whole picture will be blurred.

07

La escalera de apoyos

The ladder of supports

Each rung halves the tremor, that is, doubles the time you can hold. The first four are the cheat sheet's tricks and cost nothing. These are the times at 35 mm with the two-pixel criterion:

On top of that, separately, comes the body's stabilisation, which is a checkbox of its own and not a rung: two stops of OIS on the Q3 43 and four of IBIS on the SL3-S. Braced against a wall, the Q3 43 goes from 1/17 to 1/4 and the SL3-S from 1/11 to a long second. They correct your movement and never the subject's, so they are no use for freezing anyone.

The strap is the least known trick and the one that pays best for what it costs: you push the camera out until the strap is taut around your neck and shoot with the arm extended. That tension locks the camera against three points, and is worth almost as much as bracing.

Tremor is random, so out of eight frames there is one in which the hand was nearly still. It does not lengthen the average time: it improves the tail. With eight attempts, the chance that at least one lands within the criterion goes from a third to better than nine in ten. It is no use when the blur you want is the subject's, because then every frame is a different photograph and not a repetition.

08

Filter, ISO and the camera's limit

At ISO 100, the time the light asks for is t = N² / 2^EV. If the effect needs longer than that, the difference in stops is what the filter has to absorb:

pasos = log₂( t_efecto / t_correcto ) · ejemplo: 14 s a EV 13 y f/11 → 9,9 pasos → ND1000 · example: 14 s at EV 13 and f/11 → 9.9 stops → ND1000

The tool rounds up to the next commercial filter and also gives the ISO you would need without one. When that ISO falls below 25 the filter stops being optional, because no camera reaches there.

Two things the page does not discount and that are worth keeping in mind. First: a deep ND is not neutral, it tints, and the colour cost is computed in the ND filter and infrared leakage. Second: beyond thirty seconds you leave the scale and have to use bulb or the timer, with what that implies in terms of a release and thermal drift.
