La corona a simular

The corona to simulate

Radius of the corona in solar radii. 2 R is the bright inner corona; 4 R a typical photographic capture; 7–8 R the long streamers in extended exposures. In 2027 the Sun is coming down from the cycle-25 maximum but remains active: a still-rich, almost symmetric corona with streamers at all latitudes.

Real solar filters stray from their nominal ND by up to a stop, and that is the largest uncertainty in the whole partial phase. Run the test above on any clear day, measure how many stops over or under you are and enter them here (positive if your filter is denser than nominal and asks for more exposure): the correction is added to the filter's Q in every partial-phase table, in the printed sheet and in the link you share.

If your phone clock runs fast or slow, correct it here. Check the time against a synchronised source before you leave: the diamond ring lasts a couple of seconds and a 20 s offset throws the whole burst out of place.

Cómo se calcula

How it is computed

Framing geometry
Field of view 2·arctan(side / 2·f) from the sensor side and the effective focal length (true focal × teleconverter). Solar disc 0.5253° for the Earth-Sun distance of 2 August 2027 (1.0149 AU); lunar disc 1.079 × the solar one. Plate scale 206265 · pitch / f ″/px, with the pitch derived from the millimetres and the megapixels. More detail in the technical manual.
The Moon's position instant by instant
The separation of centres is fitted to the computed contacts of the site: constant relative speed on each branch, ingress and egress separately, and a minimum separation that reproduces the duration of totality. The covered fraction of the photosphere is the intersection area of two circles over the area of the solar disc. The position angle of the lunar motion comes from the Moon-Sun relative velocity projected into the site's alt-azimuth frame.
Photometry
Fred Espenak's guide: t = f² / (ISO · 2^(Q − ΔEV)). Q by structure: diamond ring 13, Baily's beads 12, chromosphere 11, prominences 9; corona 7 at 0.1 R☉, 5 at 0.2, 3 at 0.5, 1 at 1 R☉ and 0 at 2 R☉, interpolated in the logarithm of the radius. Beyond 2 R☉ it extrapolates as Q = −log₂(r/2), the Baumbach-law falloff rounded to one stop per doubling of the radius: that is why a 4 R☉ corona comes out at Q ≈ −1.
Atmosphere
Bennett refraction on the geometric altitude; Kasten and Young air mass on the apparent altitude; extinction ΔEV = 1.327 · k · (X − 1) with k = 0.20 for a clean sky and 0.30 for haze. Estimated seeing 2″ · X^0.6. The flattening of the disc and the 400-700 nm dispersion both follow from differential refraction between the two limbs.
Trailing and the bracket
Sidereal drift ω = 15.041″/s · cos δ = 14.32″/s for the declination of 2 August 2027 (+17.78°). Longest untrailed time t_max = b · scale / ω with b the budget in pixels. Longest focal length without tracking f_max = 206265 · pitch · b / (ω · t) for the slowest exposure of the bracket. The bracket runs from the chosen bright end down to the Q of your corona at the chosen step, and is split into centred runs of whatever size the camera's bracketing allows.

Límites y supuestos

Limits and assumptions

A drawing, not an ephemeris
The corona in the viewer is drawn with the Baumbach falloff and eight streamers at fixed positions: it shows the size and the extent, not the real shape, which nobody knows until the day. The contacts are those published per site, with an uncertainty of the order of a second; the 1.079 magnitude is applied identically to all nine sites, when in reality it varies by thousandths between the edge and the axis of the path.
The exposure is a starting point
Espenak's Q table describes an average corona under a clean sky. Neither the solar activity of the day, nor high cloud, nor sensor temperature enter the calculation, and real solar filters stray from their nominal ND by up to a stop: that is what the rehearsal with today's Sun and the measured-deviation field are for. Always bracket.
Trailing rules before diffraction
At these focal lengths the seeing is usually larger than the Airy disc and than a one-pixel trailing budget: asking for 1 px is stricter than the atmosphere itself. The detail ceiling per body and per aperture is settled in the diffraction tab, not here.
Nine sites, not a map
Only the nine tabulated places are computed. For any other point on the path, the duration of totality grows toward the central axis and falls to zero at the edges; the sites near the northern edge (Málaga, Cádiz) are the most sensitive to moving a few kilometres.
