Modelo y alcance

Model and scope

The simulator solves two independent problems and presents them coupled to the local circumstances of nine sites — from Tarifa to Luxor — on 2 August 2027:

The whole calculation is first-order and deterministic: it models neither radiative transfer, nor variable seeing, nor the spectral response of the sensor. It is a planning tool, not a light meter. Where the model simplifies, this is stated in the section on assumptions.

02

Geometría del campo

Field geometry

Under rectilinear (gnomonic) projection, the angular field of view across a sensor side of length d with effective focal length f is:

FOV = 2 · arctan( d / (2f) )

It is computed separately for the horizontal and the vertical side of the sensor. For a centred circular subject (the disc and its corona), the limiting dimension is min(FOVH, FOVV): it defines the most restrictive crop. The simulator's verdict is anchored to that bound.

Factor de recorte y focal equivalente

Crop factor and equivalent focal length

The crop factor is the ratio of diagonals with respect to the 35 mm frame (43.27 mm):

crop = 43,27 / √(w² + h²) ; feq = f · crop

The equivalent focal length serves only to compare framings across formats; the real FOV depends on the physical focal length and on the native dimensions of the sensor, not on the equivalent.

Teleconverter: the simulator multiplies the focal length by the TC factor for the geometric calculation, which is correct. For photometry, remember that a TC also raises the effective f-number (Nef = N · TC): a 2× costs two stops. Enter the working f-number in the exposure section, not that of the bare lens.
Validity: rectilinear projection ceases to describe very wide-angle lenses well and does not apply to fisheyes (equisolid or equidistant projection). At the focal lengths useful for the eclipse this is irrelevant, but it is worth bearing in mind if a wide angle is simulated in order to include landscape.

Tamaños angulares

Angular sizes

Disco solar

Solar disc

The angular diameter is θ = 2R☉ / D. In mid-August the Earth is near aphelion (distance ≈ 1.013 AU), so that:

θ☉ = 2 · 6,957·10⁵ km / (1,013 · 1,496·10⁸ km) ≈ 9,18·10⁻³ rad ≈ 0,526° ≈ 31,6′

The simulator uses 0.525°. The seasonal variation of the solar diameter is ±1.7% over the year; within the August window it is negligible beside other uncertainties.

Luna y magnitud

Moon and magnitude

Being a total eclipse, the apparent lunar diameter exceeds the solar one. The model draws the Moon as an opaque disc of 1,04 × θ☉, consistent with an eclipse magnitude slightly greater than unity. This suffices for framing; it does not set out to reproduce the profile of the lunar limb, which is what governs the exact instant of Baily's beads.

Corona

Corona

The corona is parametrised by its radius in solar radii R☉. It has no physical edge: its surface brightness falls off sharply with distance. The K component (photospheric light scattered by electrons, Thomson) dominates the inner region; the F component (dust, zodiacal light) dominates the outer one. The visible extent and the symmetry of the streamers depend on the point reached in the solar cycle; in August 2027 we shall be descending from the maximum of cycle 25, with a corona still rich in streamers. The practical photographable limit is around 3° in diameter.

Cromosfera

Chromosphere

Capa de unos 2.000 km de espesor. Su extensión angular es:

A layer some 2,000 km thick. Its angular extent is:

It is therefore irrelevant for framing and is resolved only at long focal lengths, and only during the second or two of the flash at the contacts. The simulator accordingly treats it as a ring of exaggerated thickness and assigns it no row in the table of sizes.

04

Fotometría: modelo de Espenak

Photometry: Espenak's model

The shutter time is obtained from Espenak's relation:

t = N² / (I · 2Q) ; N = número f, I = ISO, t en segundos ; N = f-number, I = ISO, t in seconds

It is the standard exposure equation rearranged. Starting from N²/t = L·S/K (with L the luminance of the subject, S the sensitivity and K the meter constant), Espenak gathers the surface brightness of each structure into a single exponent:

Q = log₂( L / K' ) → cada unidad de Q equivale a un paso (stop) → each unit of Q is equivalent to one stop

That is the property which makes the model workable: since t ∝ 2-Q, the exposure difference between two structures is exactly ΔQ stops. The Q values are empirical, calibrated by Espenak with his own plates and those of Sky & Telescope:

Interpolación y extrapolación de Q

Interpolation and extrapolation of Q

The Q of the Baader ND 3.8 is derived from its density: every 0.3 of optical density is one stop, hence Q(3,8) = Q(5,0) + (5,0−3,8)/0,301 ≈ 8 + 4 = 12. For an arbitrary coronal extent, the simulator interpolates Q linearly in log₁₀(r) between the tabulated points. Beyond 2.0 R☉ it prolongs the slope of the last segment (≈ −3.32 Q per decade), whence:

Q(4 R☉) ≈ −1 Q(8 R☉) ≈ −2 (extrapolado, tratar como orientativo) (extrapolated, treat as indicative)

The actual brightness of the outer corona obeys no single law, so these values are a conservative guide for setting the slow end of the exposure bracket, not a photometric prediction.

Photosphere against corona: the photosphere is of the order of 10⁶ times brighter than the corona, some 20 stops. Hence the filter is non-negotiable during the partial phases, and removing it is equally non-negotiable during totality. The thin crescent adds a further two stops or so through limb darkening, which the model applies in the partial phase.
05

Horquilla y rango dinámico

Exposure bracket and dynamic range

With N and I fixed, the exposure bracket runs from the chromosphere (Q 11) to the corona at the chosen extent, in 1 EV steps. The number of frames is span + 1, where:

span = 11 − Qext (pasos) ; ej. 4 R☉ → 11 − (−1) = 12 pasos → 13 tomas (stops) ; e.g. 4 R☉ → 11 − (−1) = 12 stops → 13 frames

Each time is rounded to the nearest standard shutter speed on a third-stop grid, by minimum distance on a logarithmic scale. The simulator estimates the total time as the sum of the exposures plus a fixed margin per frame, and warns if it approaches the 76 s of totality.

It is advisable to capture in RAW and, if the camera allows it, to chain the exposure bracket with continuous drive or an intervalometer so that nothing need be touched during totality. Subsequent HDR stacking reconstructs the full range that no single frame can span.

06

Extinción y altura del Sol

Extinction and solar altitude

Espenak's Q values incorporate no airmass correction. In 2027 totality occurs with the Sun high: 37–41° over Spain and Morocco, 82° at Luxor, so the airmass is moderate. With the Kasten and Young formulation:

The excess airmass with respect to the zenith is only 0.6 units over Spain. With a typical visual extinction coefficient k ≈ 0.2 mag per airmass in clean air:

Δm = k · ΔX ≈ 0,2 · 0,62 ≈ 0,12 mag ≈ 0,2 pasos con calima (k ≈ 0,3): ≈ 0,19 mag ≈ 0,25 pasos · en 2026, con el Sol a 12°, llegó a 1 paso enterowith haze (k ≈ 0.3): ≈ 0.19 mag ≈ 0.25 stops · in 2026, with the Sun at 12°, it reached a full stop

In practice: in 2027 the correction is of the order of a fifth of a stop, nearly negligible against the bracket; haze dominates, not altitude. The simulator keeps the correction as a selectable setting and computes it dynamically for the chosen site: ΔEV = 1,327·k·(X(h)−1) with k = 0.20 (clean) or 0.30 (haze), applied as Qef = Q − ΔEV. The formula is general: for a low-Sun eclipse, such as 2026 at 12°, it returns +1 EV or more, and there extinction does rule. It remains chromatic (greater in the blue), but at these altitudes the reddening of the corona is minor.

Background contrast: with the Sun high, the sky during totality is markedly darker than in a twilight eclipse, and the reach towards the outer streamers is limited chiefly by the time available and by haze, not by the background. One of the photographic advantages of 2027 over 2026.

Resolución y muestreo

Resolution and sampling

Escala de placa

Plate scale

s = 206265 · p / f [″/px] ; p = paso de píxel, f = focal (misma unidad) [″/px] ; p = pixel pitch, f = focal length (same unit)

Ejemplo: f = 1000 mm, p = 4 µm → s ≈ 0,82″/px.

Example: f = 1000 mm, p = 4 µm → s ≈ 0,82″/px. The solar disc (≈ 1893″) then covers some 2,300 px in diameter.

The simulator now carries the bodies with their pixel pitch, so the scale comes ready. With the three of them:

CuerpoPaso500 mm1000 mmDisco a 1000 mm
BodyPitch500 mm1000 mmDisc at 1000 mm
M11 · Q3 433,76 µm1,55″/px0,78″/px2440 px
SL3-S5,94 µm2,45″/px1,23″/px1545 px
SL3-S · multishot 962,97 µm1,23″/px0,61″/px3090 px

With an ordinary 2″ seeing, critical sampling (two pixels per resolved element) asks for s ≤ 1.0″/px, and that is reached at 776 mm on the M11 or Q3 43, at 1225 mm on the SL3-S and at 613 mm on its 96 MP multishot. Below those focal lengths the sensor rules; above them the atmosphere does, and the extra pixels only spread the same blur over more cells.

Límite de difracción

Diffraction limit

The angular radius of the Airy disc is θ ≈ 1,22 λ / Dₐ, with Dₐ = f/N the diameter of the entrance pupil. For λ = 550 nm:

θ ≈ 0,138 / Dₐ(m) [″] ; ej. f/8 a 1000 mm → Dₐ = 0,125 m → θ ≈ 1,1″ [″] ; e.g. f/8 at 1000 mm → Dₐ = 0,125 m → θ ≈ 1,1″

At high f-numbers the system becomes limited by diffraction before it is limited by the sensor. The fine structure of the chromosphere (≈ 2.7″) is no more than hinted at if sampling and aperture allow, and is always limited by the seeing, which at 12° altitude will be appreciable.

08

Arrastre por movimiento diurno

Trailing from diurnal motion

On a fixed tripod, the Sun drifts under the Earth's rotation at an angular rate of:

ω = 15,04″/s · cos δ ; δ(12 ago) ≈ +15° → ω ≈ 14,5″/s ; δ(12 Aug) ≈ +15° → ω ≈ 14,5″/s

The maximum exposure time that keeps trailing below a blur budget b (in pixels) is:

tmáx = b · s / ω ; con s ≈ 0,82″/px y b = 1 px → tmáx ≈ 0,055 s ≈ 1/18 s ; with s ≈ 0,82″/px and b = 1 px → tmáx ≈ 0,055 s ≈ 1/18 s

That is to say, at 1000 mm on a fixed tripod, any frame of the corona slower than ~1/15 s already trails at the pixel level. The slow exposures at the far end of the bracket (outer corona, several tenths of a second or more) demand equatorial tracking at long focal lengths. Relaxing b to 2 or 3 px doubles or triples the margin, which is useful if the image is to be downsampled. The simulator implements this calculation: from the megapixel count entered it derives the plate scale and flags in red those bracket speeds which exceed tmáx on a 1 px budget, unless a tracking mount is specified.

Note: near the horizon the path is oblique and differential refraction slightly deforms the disc, but the modulus of ω remains a good guide for the trailing budget.

Supuestos y límites

Assumptions and limits

Taken together, the figures are a sound point of departure. Final calibration comes from a test session with your own equipment and, if possible, with the Sun low so as to reproduce the airmass of the event.

Seville misses totality narrowly: magnitude 0.979, a deep partial. X is the Kasten-Young airmass at the altitude of maximum. The simulator's extinction correction is derived from it for each location: ΔEV = 1,327·k·(X−1), with k = 0.20 (clean) or 0.30 (haze).
