Fases del juicio estético fotográfico
Phases of photographic aesthetic judgement
An image is judged good, as art, when it deposits value in more than one phase and the transitions between them are coherent. Coherence between phases, not their sum, is the critical variable. The axis is visual processing time — what the brain does in the first tenth of a second, in the seconds of exploration, and in the later integration with what one already knows; along it are distributed sources of value of quite different natures. The companion sheet says what to do when photographing; this one, how what was done is judged. The four operations there — programme, encounter, processing, archive — reappear here as what the viewer receives in three tempos. Sheet 1 of 2; the second: the framework for thinking photography.

P(H | Ibaja). In step 2 it takes the place of the prior, which is why the first impression anchors the later reading. The prior in the strict sense is P(H), independent of the image.P(H|Ibaja), combinando la verosimilitud P(Ibaja|H) con el prior estructural P(H).
The low band yields a signed evaluation, P(H|Ilow), combining the likelihood P(Ilow|H) with the structural prior P(H). Output: an impression carrying valence, not an identity.
P(Ialta|H).
The high frequencies, which carry the identity of the object, update the impression: factor P(Ihigh|H). The posterior of step 1 enters as the prior; the evidence confirms it or corrects it.
La varianza entre observadores del carril de fase 3 es la varianza de ese posterior.P(Ihigh|H) by destroying the identity of the object that carries it, while preserving P(H|Ilow): the valence is left unconfirmed, the observer stays with the initial impression and completes it by projection. If Ilow is lost as well, H is never even estimated and the posterior is governed by P(H) alone, a prior with no likelihood to discipline it. That is hermeticism. The between-observer variance in the phase 3 rail is the variance of that posterior.Perfil de valor sobre las fases
Value profile across the phases
Two modes of incoherence degrade the judgement. One: value exhausted in phase 1 — a powerful gist, high contrast, emphatic composition — and nothing to find afterwards: impact with no reward for exploration. The other: an image dense in detail whose first glance promises nothing, so no one stays to explore it and its value is never seen. Honouring each photograph in its own mode amounts to assessing it by the phase profile it chose, not by another: asking a descriptive photograph for the punch of an expressive one is applying one phase's criterion to an image that bet on another.

The companion sheet prescribes: suspect the programme, honour the encounter, start from neutral, let the archive mature; and it names the traps — the crutches, the technical demonstration, the two confusions — and the Japanese concepts. Each of those tools acts on one specific phase of the viewer. This is the correspondence.
- The programme (Flusser) lives here: the photograph one “already knows how to make” wins the first second and nothing more. It is the redundant image: recognisable gist, no remainder.
- The crutches and the seven channels of drama — subject, moment, light, composition, colour, processing, presentation — artificially raise this phase. Hence their immediate reward and their emptiness at five minutes.
- Subtlety (Ghirri, wabi-sabi, muted palettes) lowers this phase on purpose: it forgoes the first second to win the fifth minute. That is why it looks weak when seen quickly.
- Ma, the active void, is pure low frequency: gist without object. It holds the impression while giving nothing to identify.
- Shore's four devices — flatness, frame, time, focus — decide how much material there is to explore and where it lies. They are the physics of this phase.
- Sabi (the texture of time) and fukinsei (the asymmetry that makes the eye stay) are exploration value: they retain because something is left unresolved.
- Confusion A kills this phase: cropping and adding contrast to a descriptive photograph removes the space and the mid-greys where the explorable lived.
- Technical euphoria and the demonstration give exploration without integration: endless detail, everything determined, nothing to project. It is the “technical demonstration” row of the table: high, high, none.
- Yūgen — evoking more than it shows — is, in these terms, projection under underdetermination: the image fixes the scene and leaves a gap in the particulars for the viewer to fill. The work “does not end with the click” because this phase is won or lost in processing and selection.
- Barthes's punctum and resonance (multiple frequencies, ways in) are the content of this phase: intense, hardly universal, not transferable. That is why they are measured as variance between observers.
- Mono no aware is what the viewer brings: their own transience. The image does not contain it; it summons it.
- Ichigo ichie is not visible in the image, but it leaves a trace: the repeatable does not prick. Kintsugi: the accepted crack is one more way in.
Technical decisions are not a layer separate from the judgement: they are the physical mechanism that fixes in which phase the image deposits value. Each parameter is filed under the phase on which it acts predominantly.
- Desenfoque global (paso bajo).
- Exposure and tonal key. They fix the key (high or low) that carries much of the valence. Blowing the highlights destroys the light values for good, yet keeps contour and figure–ground, which go on feeding the gist.
- Colour temperature and balance. The warm–cool axis is a global statistic of valence: a warm and a cool cast give the same scene a different affective tone, before anything is recognised.
- Sensor profile. Colour matrix and base curve displace the overall chromatic distribution.
- Global blur (low-pass). It attenuates edges and texture (high frequencies) and keeps the coarse shapes: that is why a blurred scene is still recognisable as a scene though no object is. Unlike highlight clipping, it is in principle reversible (deconvolution): it degrades gracefully.
- Resolution and acutance. They determine how much structure there is to resolve on close looking: a high-acutance image offers phase 2 material; a soft-focus one withholds it on purpose. Measurable indices: variance of the Laplacian, local contrast.
- Depth of field and plane of focus. They distribute where the detail lies: a shallow depth concentrates exploration in one zone and suppresses the rest; a deep one (large format, typology) spreads it across the frame. One of the few variables under direct control at the moment of exposure.
- Surface texture. Grain and noise treated as information, not defect: micro-structure that phase 2 can explore. Quantification: GLCM (grey-level co-occurrence) and LBP (local micro-shape).
- Optical character. Aberrations, halos, vignetting. And a diagnostic: sweep and long exposure leave a dominant direction in the blur (anisotropy); optical out-of-focus is the same in every direction. Two equally unsharp images may differ in mechanism, and that residue is information about how it was made, not noise.
- Control of underdetermination. Blur, exposure and depth regulate how much of the object's identity is preserved, and hence the size of the gap left for projection.
- Materiality of the print. Paper, process and finish sustain a contemplation time that favours this phase.
The three phases describe what happens to the viewer. But a photograph's first viewer is the one who made it, and that viewer is contaminated by the memory of the moment and by the effort it cost. Judging one's own work demands a protocol with tempos, because judgement matures just as the photograph does. Taken from part V of La Foto Rota and from the method notes.
- Do not review on the day of the shot. The memory of the encounter covers the image: you see what you meant to do, not what you did. It is the companion sheet's memory bias.
- Nor process in the heat: the urge to “give something” to a weak photograph is almost always confusion A. Stop and ask whether there was a photograph.
- The only things allowed: a backup and a one-line note on what stopped you.
- Edit without remembering. Look at each image as if it were someone else's: what does it say, what does it not, what does it provoke when you do not know its story?
- Apply the concept. Can what you intended be seen without your explaining it? If you have to say it is sabi, it is not sabi: the concept goes in the image, not in the caption.
- Look for the habitual error. Each concept has its trap and its tell-tale sentence: the companion sheet's trap table.
- Remove the text. Does the photograph still work without caption or story? If not, the text was doing the work: illustrated text, not photography.
- Select the most honest, not the prettiest: those that say something you could not have said better otherwise.
- Listen to the discomfort. The ones that bother you most may be the most interesting. Do not discard them at once: look longer.
Comparar a 1, 3 y 6 meses.
- Blind review with survival rate. Each month, score the recent archive (discard / doubtful / stays) without seeing earlier scores. Compare at 1, 3 and 6 months. What transcribed a real perception survives; what pleased in the heat falls.
- Contagion sampling. Sequences of 5 to 7 images to an attuned viewer, with no context or explanation; note only where they stop and what they ask. It estimates where your border between evoking and hermeticism lies.
- The same image alone and in sequence. If it survives in sequence and dies alone, the problem was not the image but the unit of analysis (Kawauchi: the meaning may lie between the photographs).
- Rule: one line per review, always. What is not written down gets rewritten by the theory of the day. — method notes
- The author shows the photograph and says nothing. The group describes what it sees; only then does the author explain the intent. If they describe something else, the image does not communicate what it should.
- Describe before judging. First what is seen, without valuing; then the opinion. The order forces one to really look.
- No talk of technique. Only of intention and result: the question is not “is it well exposed?” but “does what you intended come across?”.
- Honesty is not cruelty. Point out what does not work with the same care as what does.
