The whole workflow can be done without the console. Siril organises the process into tabs along the bottom of the window, and the working order matches their left-to-right order. This diagram locates each zone (the exact layout may vary slightly between versions):
- 1 House icon: sets the working directory. The first thing to touch in every project.
- 2 Hamburger menu: home of Preferences, Scripts (with OSC_Preprocessing) and Image processing (background extraction, SPCC, stretches, StarNet).
- 3 Workflow tabs: walked in order, Conversion → Calibration → Registration → Stacking. The Sequence tab lists and filters the frames; Plot shows FWHM and roundness per frame.
- 4 Command line: accepts the commands from this manual's code blocks. GUI and console do exactly the same thing.
- 5 Image area: with the display selector on Autostretch you can see the content of linear, unstretched images.
Siril works with homogeneous sequences: same lens, same exposure, same ISO and roughly the same temperature within each series. Organise the session like this before touching the software:
proyecto_cygnus/ ├── lights/ # tomas del objeto, DNG · object frames, DNG ├── darks/ # mismo tiempo, ISO y temperatura que lights, con tapa · same time, ISO, temp as lights, cap on ├── flats/ # CON el filtro UHC montado · WITH the UHC filter mounted └── biases/ # exposición mínima (1/16000 s), mismo ISO · shortest exposure, same ISO
- Biases: 30 a 50, cuestan segundos.
- Lights: 30 to 60 frames of 60 to 120 s at f/2.8 or f/4, ISO 800 to 1600. With the Polaris, dither every 3 or 4 frames if the session allows.
- Darks: 20 to 25, at the end of the session with the camera already at working temperature.
- Flats: 20 to 25, against a panel or a uniform twilight sky, histogram centred. With this rig the flats correct both the optical vignetting and part of the chromatic vignetting the front UHC introduces on the wide angle.
- Biases: 30 to 50, they take seconds.
¿Qué es imprescindible con tu sensor? What is essential with your sensor?
The per-pixel signal model is S = object + read offset + thermal signal, multiplied by the system response. Each frame type isolates one term, and they do not all weigh the same with a modern BSI CMOS and short subexposures:
| Tipo | Qué mide | Con la M11P + UHC |
|---|---|---|
| Type | What it measures | With the M11P + UHC |
|---|---|---|
| Lights | The signal from the sky | They are the data, not the calibration. Always. |
| Flats | Vignetting, dust, per-zone response of the UHC | Essential on this rig: they correct the chromatic vignetting of the front filter. |
| Bias | Read offset | They take a minute; needed to calibrate the flats properly. One master per ISO is reused for months. |
| Darks | Dark current and hot pixels | The most dispensable: with 60 to 120 s subs, a cool night, dithering and statistical rejection, their contribution is marginal. Take them only if you see hot pixels or a fixed pattern after stacking. |
The camera's LENR: the M11 has long-exposure noise reduction that internally captures and subtracts a dark of equal duration. For stacking it is best disabled in the menu: it doubles the time per frame and adds the noise of that subtraction to every light. That time is better spent on more subexposures. If you leave it on, external darks are entirely redundant (you would be subtracting the thermal term twice).
If you skip the darks, keep the cosmetic correction in calibration based on the master bias or use find_hot, and do not give up dithering.
A screen a few centimetres away, with the lens at infinity, is completely out of focus, so its texture is no problem. What does need correcting is its emission: it is not Lambertian (an OLED's colour changes with viewing angle, and the 28 mm collects rays at up to 37 degrees), it is polarised (a UHC at oblique incidence transmits differently depending on polarisation) and its brightness is regulated by PWM, which produces banding at short exposures. All three effects are solved the same way:
- White screen at maximum brightness, with two or three sheets of white paper on top as diffuser and depolariser, resting on the hood or the filter holder.
- Mechanical shutter and 0.5 to 2 s exposures at base ISO, to average many PWM cycles.
- Exposure set by watching the red channel's histogram (the weakest through the UHC): bring it to a third or half of the range without saturating the green.
- 20 to 25 frames; moving the phone between frames is optional — the defocus and the averaging already do the work.
- Do not change focus, aperture or filter position relative to the lights.
A UHC in front of a 28 or 35 mm receives the field rays at up to 32 to 38 degrees of incidence. The passband of an interference filter shifts towards the blue with angle, so the edges of the frame lose transmission in a wavelength-dependent way. A flat taken with the filter captures that per-channel profile and partially compensates it during calibration. The colour residue is removed later with background extraction.
Instalar y configurar SirilInstalling and configuring Siril
Download Siril from siril.org (Windows, macOS, Linux; GPL licence). The M11P's DNGs are read via LibRaw without prior conversion. Initial settings under Preferences:
- FITS: 32-bit floating-point depth. At 60 MP the intermediate files are large; allow 100 GB or more of disk per project.
- Bayer interpolation: leave it on automatic; the pattern is read from the DNG metadata.
- Working directory: set
proyecto_cygnus/as the working folder (house icon, top left).
Vía rápida: script OSC_PreprocessingFast lane: the OSC_Preprocessing script
Before the manual workflow, it is worth knowing the shortcut. Siril ships with scripts that run the whole chain. Rename your folders exactly as the script expects and launch it from the Scripts → OSC_Preprocessing menu:
proyecto_cygnus/
├── lights/
├── darks/
├── flats/
└── biases/ # el script clásico espera "biases" · the classic script expects "biases"
The script converts, calibrates, registers and stacks with sensible parameters, leaving a result.fit in the working directory. It is the recommended path for the first series; steps 04 to 07 describe the same thing manually, with control over every parameter.
Cuándo abandonar el script y pasar al flujo manualWhen to abandon the script for the manual workflow
When you want tuned statistical rejection (planes, Starlink satellites, gusts of wind on the Polaris), FWHM weighting, drizzle, or when the series mixes nights with slightly different framings. Also if the chromatically vignetted edges confuse registration and you prefer to crop before aligning.
Flujo manual · Conversión a secuenciaManual workflow · Conversion to sequences
In the Conversion tab add the DNGs from each folder and create one sequence per frame type. It is quicker from the console (command-line tab):
# desde el directorio de trabajo · from the working directory
cd biases
convert bias -out=../process
cd ../darks
convert dark -out=../process
cd ../flats
convert flat -out=../process
cd ../lights
convert light -out=../process
cd ../process
Each command creates a sequence (bias_.seq, dark_.seq, etc.) in the process folder. Demosaicing is not applied yet: the CFA is kept until calibration.
The Conversion tab: + button to add the DNGs from one folder, type the sequence name (for example light), leave the output type on FITS and press Convert. Repeat for each folder, changing the name. The demosaicing box must stay unticked at this stage.
- 1 Add the DNGs from the corresponding folder.
- 2 Sequence name: light, dark, flat or bias.
- 3 Convert creates the sequence in the working directory.
The calibration files are stacked first, by median or rejection, and the lights are corrected with them:
-cc=darkapplies cosmetic hot-pixel correction from the master dark.-equalize_cfaequalises the mean response of the CFA channels before dividing by the flat, useful with filters that strongly unbalance the channels, such as the UHC.-debayerdemosaics at the end of calibration; you get thepp_light_sequence already in colour.
Variante sin darks (ver paso 01)No-darks variant (see step 01)
If you decided to skip the darks, calibrate the lights with bias and flat only:
calibrate light -bias=bias_stacked -flat=pp_flat_stacked -cfa -equalize_cfa -debayer
Without a master dark there is no cosmetic correction at this stage (the bad-pixel-map option requires a pre-existing file); dithering and the stacking rejection take care of the hot pixels.
Load the sequence first (Sequence tab, search button, select bias_.seq). For the masters, go to Stacking and stack each calibration set. Then, with the light_ sequence loaded, open the Calibration tab:
pp_light_.
- 1 Select each master from its dropdown (the stacks from the start of the step).
- 2 Cosmetic hot-pixel correction (equivalent to
-cc). - 3 Tick debayering and CFA channel equalisation, important with the UHC.
- 4 Calibrate produces the
pp_light_sequence.
Registro (alineado estelar)Registration (star alignment)
Global registration detects stars in every frame and computes the transformation relative to a reference. With Polaris tracking at 28 or 35 mm the translations are small and the rotations minimal:
register pp_light -2pass seqapplyreg pp_light -framing=min
-2passfirst measures all frames, chooses the best reference and then applies; more consistent than a single pass.-framing=mincrops to the common area, removing the edges that drift between frames (and with them part of the zone most affected by the filter's spectral shift).
With the pp_light_ sequence loaded, Registration tab: in the method dropdown choose Global star alignment (deep sky), tick the two-pass option and press Register. Once measuring finishes, apply the transformation with the apply-existing-registration button, choosing minimum framing. In the Plot tab you can review FWHM and roundness per frame and manually exclude the worst ones from the Sequence tab.
Drizzle y series con ditheringDrizzle and dithered series
If you dithered, you can enable drizzle during registration (-drizzle) to recover resolution, although at 60 MP and f/2.8 the sampling is already generous and the cost in disk and noise rarely pays off at these focal lengths.
Apilado con rechazo estadísticoStacking with statistical rejection
Mean stacking with Winsorized sigma clipping is the standard for series of 20 or more frames: it averages the background (SNR grows as √N) and removes plane and satellite trails:
stack r_pp_light rej w 3 3 -norm=addscale -output_norm -weight_from_wfwhm -out=result load result save cygnus_master
rej w 3 3: Winsorized rejection with 3σ thresholds above and below. If trail remnants survive, lower the high threshold to 2.5.-norm=addscale: normalises level and scale between frames, needed if the background varied during the session (thin passing clouds, change in the object's altitude).-weight_from_wfwhm: weights each frame by the quality of its stars, penalising frames with wind or imperfect tracking.
En la interfaz gráficaIn the graphical interface
Con la secuencia registrada r_pp_light_ cargada, pestaña Apilado:
With the registered r_pp_light_ sequence loaded, Stacking tab:
- 1 Promedio con rechazo: equivale a

- 3 Normalización aditiva con escalado (
-norm=addscale).
- 1 Average with rejection: equivalent to

Postprocesado del másterPostprocessing the master
Recommended order on the stacked image, all inside Siril except where noted:
- 1. Recorte.
- 1. Crop. Remove registration borders and, in this case, consider cropping the outer 15 to 20 percent of the 28 mm frame, where the UHC no longer transmits Hα.
- 2. Background extraction. Image processing → Background extraction, polynomial of degree 1 or 2 with samples only on nebula-free sky. More powerful alternative: GraXpert, invoked from within Siril.
- 3. Photometric colour calibration (SPCC). Plate-solves the field and adjusts colour against a catalogue (Gaia). In the sensor and filter settings, select an OSC sensor and the UHC bands if you use the narrowband-aware version; it recovers a physical balance despite the filter.
- 4. Stretching. Histogram transformation or, with more control, GHS (generalised hyperbolic stretch). Stretch a little at a time, in several passes; keep the background around 0.10 to 0.13.
- 5. Stars apart. StarNet++ from Siril separates stars and nebula; process the nebula aggressively (saturation, per-channel curves to lift Hα) and recompose with restrained stars.
- 6. Saturation and noise. Selective saturation on the nebula; noise reduction last and in moderation (Siril's own or GraXpert denoise).
Levantar Hα sin romper el fondoLifting Hα without breaking the background
After SPCC, if the red is still short, apply a gentle curve to the R channel alone with the nebula separated from the stars, or use asinh with a low factor before the main stretch. Avoid multiplying the whole R channel: it also amplifies the background read noise, proportionally larger in the red with the UHC.
